Being better when putting your foot down over the 1600 rpm threshold goes against my theory.
Rather than a leak, I was thinking more of one of the rubber hose sections of the fuel line de-laminating inside so the loose lining of the pipe acts as a flap valve.
Not heard of it happening before but I've not heard of your problem either.
Bit of a trek for you but WOM automotive are certainly A2 specialists who don't overcharge
