Anything to watch out for with a oil filter change?

Our A2 is due an oil change. This will be the first time I've done it (done as part of MoT/full service last year) so wanted to check if there's anything I need to be aware of. Will the filter strip its thread? Do I need a spare sump plug? Is the under tray impossible to remove without special tools? Hints and tips appreciated!

No special tools needed other than biggish socket for oil filter cap, undertray is just held by lot of star screws and couple of 10mm nuts... if webasto fitted then bit of work to undo exhaust pipe from tray,

You will have to remove the under tray to drain the oil. The top oil filter socket is 36mm and it is described as "best practice" to fit a new sump bolt but usually a new copper ring/washer will suffice.

Try and use a 6 point 36mm socket so as not to round the plastic top if its first time you've undone it I expect the usuual super tight ultra strong previous owner did it up to 100nm

An extractor is useful to suck out the oil in the filter housing and cooler.

Sump plug is 19mm I believe.

Also, is it possible to drain the oil without removing the under tray?

Yes! And save you a tons of work. You can cut a piece out of the tray to let the oil out better, otherwise some oil will be left on top of the tray so clean after draining, and perhaps expect a few drips on the asphalt the next day.

But you should also replace air filter every second year and then you must remove the tray (easier to make the cutout with tray removed)

You do not need a new sump bolt.
