Audi A2 mpg not what I expected

I've been looking at my MPG, the DIS has jumped 1.0 from 43.4mpg to 44.4mpg since a replacement air filter and service by mike ... who we both believed the air filter has been in since 2005!! considering it has been serviced before with them, and it should of been replaced..

I get around 450 miles on shell regular diesel, now i've just calculated on the below (quick google) http://www.torquecars.com/tools/uk-mpg-calculator.php and it came up with around 51 MPG, with 450 miles entered, and 40 litres of fuel at 1.15 so that is two different figures so maybe my DIS computer is out somehow? I have reset it many times and it always goes back to around 44MPG, and there is barely traffic here and most of my miles are motorway...

Hi Richard. Sounds like we have similar cars - 75 Tdi Re mapped by Stealth - and I would say your DIS is way out. For motorway driving a rough rule of thumb is 60mph = 70mpg, 70mph = 60mpg, 80mph = 50mpg - that is with a light load.
So if you are truly getting 51mpg then are you driving in the 75/80 mph zone?
As for the DIS, I do not know the answer, is this something that can be reset via Vagcom? Others maybe can answer.

Yeah that sounds right pugliese, RPM is 2800-2900 at 80 and set with cruise

Yeah that is right Vince had a look it last year and changed the settings a little and it got a tiny bit better. But I was only still making the 400-420 mark since the service with Mike its gone to 450.. But when we went on the euro trip with a2oc last year I was running out of fuel 100-120miles before everyone else and we was all driving the same.. It's rather odd..

Are you quite sure you're comparing cars with equal fuel tanks sizes, as 100miles difference does sound like an awful lot.

Without wishing to state the obvious have you checked for binding brakes, tyre pressures, driving using the brake pedal as a footrest (has been known) or accidentally catching it? Have you tried running Redex through a few tanks or checking the MAF?

I've just brought myself a fabulous 1.4 SE A2 which I love to bits, but I'm not getting the mileage out of it I thought I would.

I'm getting just about 250-260 miles out of a tank of unleaded. I was hoping for a bit more than that. It's a 2001 model and it's done 63,000 miles. It runs great, but I'm concerned about the mpg. Am I expecting too much? Should I chuck in a slug of Redex to try and clean things up a bit?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks, Jon.:D

Hi Jon,

Perhaps the car just needs a full service? When did it last get an oil change, filters, plugs? How many times has it been serviced in the last 63,000 miles and 9 years?

John.

I've tried redex and use millers right now, but going to go back to redex soon.. I don't rest my feet near any pedals, tyre pressures are 34 all round on 17.. Don't know how to check MAF? My brakes have been catching on the disc but its wore off now. Before I had them changed I was still at the same economy.

Hi,

I have the same model as you & by the looks of it 37 tank. In & around town not getting over 40mph i'm getting about 38mpg. Roof rack on.

I did a run to Heartfordshire from Plymouth via Stroud then back roads from Barnstable to Plymouth & got around without filling up. From memory it worked out 48mpg. No roof rack.

Cheers Stuart

just read the last few posts and it would appear to me that the mileage is so bad because you have 17's and only 34 psi !

I have 17" alloys on my 1.4tdi (75), I achieve about 430 miles on a tank, the dis shows an average of 54. I do mixed driving, my journey to work is 25 miles each way, 50% of the journey is on the motorway with an average speed of 70. I think this is about right

Hotdog is barking up the right tree on tyre pressures...put 40 psi in them and you will see a change for the better....but it is not recommended to exceed the max pressure warning on the tyre sidewall.

I run 40 psi in the A2 and a slow motorway jaunt is expected to get 74 mpg. I got 50 mpg towing a 600Kg trailer the other day!

Some Honda Insight owners in the USA run 70 psi, and on my 2001 Insight I stick to a pedestrian 55 psi. Same motorway jaunt as above gets over 100 mpg in this weather. On my 80 mile commute I got 102 mpg door to door today, best ever is 122 and I am averaging 107. Around town I get 60 and the average over the 40,000 miles since I got it is 87mpg.

Regularly check your handbrake is not sticking, slow down, turn air con off, shut windows, kill the engine if at a standstill, buy thinner low rolling resistance tyres next time, ..... oh, and did I say the slow down one?

If doing all that is still not good enough, you will have to get the 1 litre A2 or a Honda Insight, both of which are probably going to prove to be depreciation proof cars, with zero VED thrown in for good measure.. My Insight will take just 5 years to pay for itself in saved petrol, and has gone up in value as well, so soon I will be Quid's in!

The Insight even has zero toe in on the steering geometry to aid rolling resistance! (As standard)

Richard - just to add my recent experiences with my TDi and economy. I was getting lousy economy, in the mid-40s in the 2nd half of last year. I also noticed that the temp gauge wasn't quite hitting 90, so I changed the temp sender sensor and then the thermostat. Since then, my economy has gone back to the low 50s. I'm re-mapped and am on 17s at 36psi. It maybe that you've got a sensor on the way out, or the stat?

Thanks dan, i'm not too worried about the DIS status, it has been around the 44MPG coming upto 2 years, working it out it seems MPG is in the 50's range. So if my sensor is on its way out i'll leave it til it completely gives up. I haven't had any problems with the temp reaching 90. Summer or winter. But for the future, how much was those two parts roughly? and 1 hour labour sound about right to change... :)

mpg

So how's your fuel consumption now?

I've got the 2005 A2 1.4 SE petrol and put approx 35 litres in when warning light beeps and it lasts for approx 325 miles, and displays between 43 a 46 mpg.
