The renaissance of the Audi A2
Posted on May 2, 2011 by admin

Following the large demand of the recently released A1, Audi has renewed faith in the success of small economic vehicles. The first generation A2 was ahead of its time, and it paid a heavy price for its advanced nature, with a short lifespan and ultimately disappointing sales making the A2 a market flop. However, the very same factors which caused the A2 to fail back in 1999; now tick all the boxes of the requirements of the modern world in terms of fuel consumption. The reason behind the A2’s low fuel consumption is its aluminium body and small displacement engines. It is exactly this, which has led Audi to consider a new Audi A2.

Audi officials have confirmed that the A2 is being discussed internally and a number of concepts are under consideration. The difficult tasks will be for the engineers at Audi, who will have the job of making the new A2 lighter than the first generation model. The original had a mass of 895kg, but the later version, the 1.2 TDI 3l was even lighter, weighing only 825kg. Initial reports have suggested that the future A2, will aim to weigh even less than this, tipping the scales at around 800kg.

Audi is considering the re-birth of the A2

In order to make next generation A2 a success, the engineers will have to balance the use of lightweight and durable materials with an engine that is economically efficient. Whilst keeping the car an affordable starting price. The starting price was a major factor in the original A2 not achieving mainstream success, it was considered to have been too expensive for its time.

Audi had previously sold the Audi A2 from 1999 until 2005, but because of poor sales and its lack of competitiveness in its market, the model was scrapped. The new model, if it is indeed reborn, is likely to use the innovative Multi-material Space Frame technology. This leads to an optimum lightweight chassis, combining aluminium, steel and carbon fibre to reduce weight as much as possible.

Reportedly the new Audi A2 will be a highly fuel-efficient compact four-seater and is likely to be unveiled at a Motor Show in its original concept form in the foreseeable future.
