Audi Dealer Service Costs - Your Experiences

Hi folks

Bought my 2001 A2 1.4 petrol from independent dealer in June. Mileage 21420. Took it straight away to Crewe Audi for it's 20k service. They charged £271 for variable service (labour/parts) + £86 for a brake fluid change (labour/parts). Not too shocked as have owned Audis before. Next service is now showing 14000 miles, which at my rate of miles should be about 18-24 months.

Ok Skipton, I'll swallow the pill. But what about a VW main dealer? They are cheaper and are often happy to bid against Mr Audi.

More thoughts on cambelt replacement.
I dont feel as strongly as Skipton about owners doing this job but as with any work on a car you need to totally competent, know your limitations and be realistic about you own skill levels. As Skipton points out, if you get it wrong, you wreck your engine but its no different to to screwing up a brake or suspension repair job, except in these cases you could end up killing yourself or someone else!!

All cam belts are not made equal so ensure genuine Audi parts are used. Aftermarket parts, even from the same manufacturer are not always to the same spec. Some might be but you will never know the truth, so play safe.

Ask the repairer what happens if the belt fails before the next replacement is due. An Audi or VW dealer may warrant the job for 1 or 2 years (new parts warranty) if your lucky but probably not for the full 4 years / 40,000 mile (or whatever the change period is for your particular car)
The Independent is likely to be even less generous if things go wrong.

In additional to the tensioner roller, consider having the water pump changed at the same time. The whole job would need doing again to replace the pump at a later date.

Cheers Spike

Hi chaps,

Dick - don't assume that I am telling you to get Audi to do the work, I'm not. As long as you get a competant and reliable workshop to do it and one that you can go back to if anything goes awry, then that will be sufficient I would have thought. So, try your local VW workshop by all means.

Spike, although it may appear that I'm tarring everyone with the same brush, I only assumed that if someone posted questions to a thread like this that they'd not have the experience to tackle what is a pretty major job. Even with my experience, I wouldn't attempt it, but I'd make sure that I chose someone who I could hold accountable in the event that things went wrong, that's all.

As for the cambelt change on the 90PS, I'm pretty sure it's now 60k miles and not 80k, but I'll have a check.

Cheers,

Mike

Humps, we could share a room in Stockport ands save even more!. My Audi independant charged £140 (or 145, bad memory) for the same job, using all Audi parts.

THAT IS CHEAP! Might consider that next time! I'm averaging a service a year! But as I learnt from my previous job as a consultant, even if it is 200 quid more expensive, I don't lose anything if it saves me two hours ;-) No wonder all the London Audi dealers charge this much for a service.

Just had a look at the latest service interval recommendations and the Poly V belt should be checked at 60K kilometers (37.5K miles).

The camshaft timing belt should be changed at 120K kilometers (75K miles) and the tensioner should be changed at 240K kilometres (150K miles).

Those numbers are direct from the workshop service shedules so should be regarded as 'official' recommendations.

In reality, you may as well get the tensioner and water pump done at 80K miles - the extra parts only come to an extra £50 or so and there is no extra labour to take into account - better safe than sorry!

Cheers,

Mike
