Audi dealership states AC compressor has failed

My AC no longer blows cold air. According to Audi the system keeps R134 pressure, but AC compressor is not working. In addition there is a nasty sound from the bearing.

Audi has appearantly discontinued the compressor, but could specialorder oner for about £1500… yes I know Norway…

So I will try to get a new one myself. Believe Denso is OEM and Autodoc has one for about £300. Will also add a new Denso dryer.

Is this all I need, or should more parts be replaced such as eg condensator or other parts?

In the past I have just replaced the compressor but I think it's recommended that the dryer be replaced too.

Actually Audi told that dryer is a service item to actually be replaced regularly. Did not know.
Replace each time circuit is opened , I would check if there are any o rings to fit & order the appropriate purple ones for the connections

You can buy a box of aircon O rings from Amazon. Very useful

The O rings used for refrigeration are different to the black ones you see on Amazon. I bought them from Audi for not much at all. The ones you want are green in colour. Also use some sealing compound especially formulated for refrigerant.

Recently replaced the Denso compressor on my A4. But after three attempts to buy a replacement from ECP etc I took the old unit to Compressor Tech in Warwick where they found that my unit was a special. They checked for contamination in the oil and then swapped the manifold off the old unit onto the rebuilt one they supplied. Fantastic service at a cost of £275. Highly recommended. New filter from Bedford Battery.

Replacement of the compressor is only part of the job . If the internal workings of the compressor have broken up , then the system will be contaminated. All the ac pipe work and evaporator will need to be flushed . New condenser and drier are essential, otherwise the new pump will fail in a very short period.

Check the condition of the PAG oil out of old compressor and make a decision from that. I have been told the dryer-accumulator is a service item also before.

Soon I will have the new compressor, dryer and condenser. Asked Audi to fit, expecting that to be a bolt on job. I also do not want to let R134 into the air.

Audi wants £1200 to fit the items… stunned!

Cant be that hard to do myself, is it? Any pitfalls?

It’s not difficult, you just need to ensure that you replace the seals to prevent any leaks between the components. Use a mobile air con engineer to extract the remaining gas and then once you have replaced the parts, have them return to test and re-gas the system.

Mobile air con engineers do not exist in Norway, so the plan is to drive to Audi, let them drain R134, drive home fit the parts and then drive back to Audi having them regas the system

Ah, that makes it a little more difficult. Do you have to use Audi for the work, or could you go somewhere else for the re-gas?

As has already been pointed out, your new compressor might fail quickly unless you make sure the pipes etc are 100% free of metall particles/dirt from the old broken compressor. This might be part of the labour cost?

Also, as I'm in the same situation, surely you can't run the engine without the gas in as the compressor is always working. So when you start engine the compressor starts, therefore if it hasn't got the new pag pil in it at correct level it will run dry and blow up??
