Audi dealership states AC compressor has failed

As has already been pointed out, your new compressor might fail quickly unless you make sure the pipes etc are 100% free of metall particles/dirt from the old broken compressor. This might be part of the labour cost?
Yes correct, £170 is for purging the system. That I will still have Audi to perform, just thinking to install the hardware myself

Also, as I'm in the same situation, surely you can't run the engine without the gas in as the compressor is always working. So when you start engine the compressor starts, therefore if it hasn't got the new pag pil in it at correct level it will run dry and blow up??

You can run the system without gas as that what typically happens when the system run out of gas.

Another workaround is just to have Audi refit the belt, so when driving the few kilometers to Audi, the compressor is completely disconnected (along with the alternator)

So will you fill the compressor with oil before refitting and re-gassing? Or is it not necessary to do this until the gassing is added?

Parts arrived:) Denso compressor made in Japan, condenser from Delphi made in china (looks cheap)

Compressor is filled with oil yes, but quantity needs to be adjusted depending on the condition of existing system

Just curious, when you buy from Autodoc from Norway do you get to pay a lot of import tax etc being outside EU?

In the past yes, but now there is a new regulation in place that shop (Autodoc) needs to take care of the Norwegian VAT upon purchase. So Autodoc no longer show prices without Norwegian VAT

That being said; price is the same as in the past as you paid Autodoc excl. VAT and Norwegian Customs added VAT (sometimes you got lucky and the shipment passed Customs without being charged for VAT) Now Autodoc is responsible for Norwegian VAT

IIRC the o rings for the air con system provided by Audi are pink! Following a front end bump, I had to replace the condenser buT managed to get a good one from a local scrappy. All fitted back together, got a mobile guy to come and evacuate the system, wait, still holding a vacuum, then refill ,with correct amount of refrigerant and oil. ( The dryer was capped immediately the system was open to the atmosphere) Still working well several years on!

Reassuring story I'm about to do the very same in a few weeks time, condenser dryer and compressor, it's never worked so looking forward after a year of windows down and no stereo!!

I have just successfully replaced the whole AC after 8 years of not working at all (or longer, I bought the car 8 years ago). Problem on mine was that the system held the gas charge but the compressor did not compress the gas. When opening the system I found the compressor to have contaminated the whole System with metal abrasion. The compressor oil was pitch black with microscopic metal flakes and every part of the system was black from the inside. So I had to change the whole system including all the hoses, pipes and the vaporizer. The hoses and pipes can be cleaned but the vaporizer has (when mounted) the in- and outlet coming in from the top so all debris is collected on the bottom of it and can not be removed. And since I did not want to take any risk of contaminating my system again I bought everything new. Except the hoses which I bought years ago from a scrapped A2 with a clean AC.

It took me a lot of hours to change everything but now it works perfect. The change of the vaporizer with the removal of the dashboard and everything under it is by far the hardest part. But I took the chance and also changed the four actuators of the climatisation unit which are tricky to change without removing the dashboard and are faulty on most of the A2s.

Crikey that's a huge job, fair play to you that's epic work. I have checked the air compressor oil status yet, obviously hoping its not been that long since it died. I've had it a year so fingers crossed. Not sure I could cope with dash out and heater unit out to change evaporator!!! What temperature did you get after all that?
