Big help needed. Engine fails

Hi all, it is a very very sad day at Chez Bammers. Bought my a2 with cream leather for 6000.00 in March 09 from fontains in Bucks after murdo spotted & posted it on classifieds. 03 50k miles.. I paid with it on my visa card but i dont think visa can help with this one. Defective Roll bars were sorted after a little hassle from garage. Car was running well. I had just sorted out a defective flasher unit & was well chuffed with m'self. Checked the fluids b4 we left & all was well. Friday 210809 travelling to Cardiff for U2 gig.... thud thud & loss of power in fast lane of M5. AA recovered to Cardiff audi. They did a 125.00 diag check & said it was heavy engine damage & very expensive & "was I sure I wanted a main dealer so far from home in Harrogate to do all work". NO... got it shipped back to Harrogate to my local specialist garage.
Full diagnosis is engine piston knackered & entire engine now seized. Complete new engine needed. I cannot believe our bad luck. I am loathed to sell off our little car as I really love it.. but we are financially strapped. Do I try find a scrapper selling complete engine..? Do I buy a brand new one & hopefully enjoy some sort of guarantee..? :(

Sensible idea's would be really appreciated right now.

I could cry, I really could. There should be a "BAWLING YOUR EYES OUT" icon.

Hi, I am very sorry to hear of your bad luck. Fontains sounds Like a main dealer? if so does the car not carry an approved used warranty? or was it a trade sale / 3 month warranty deal?

Secondly, can you contact the previous owner(s). To check the mileage checks out. It seems strange that this can happen on a low mileage car. I know things can be abused and destroyed in a few miles, but yours sounds a cared for car with the nice spec, someone must have cherished it originally.

If the mileage is not correct, you may be able to get the dealer to refund or at least the fix the car.

Visa may or may not cover you, but they I am sure they will have a a department who may help you sort out your misfortune with the dealer.

Finally, most insurance has free legal help, or try citizens advice, give them a ring and find out where you stand before you start arguing with anyone.

Good luck.

dont buy davys link on Ebay thats for a 1.2 tdi

saw a whole car as a breaker for £1800 here the other day.

an exchange is going to be around £1500+

3 month dealer warranty.... the miles are checked & correct. Me thinks I am stuffed..... I think I need an act of god localised in the HG1 3SU area.

Try this company, ive seen Sarge quote them on different threads (thats where this comes from(You can try John at KJ Cars, he's usually breaking A2's and see how much an Petrol A2 engine would be.

Good luck, and very sorry to hear Phil

Sorry to hear your news pal. It seems really unusual for such a low mileage TDi to suffer engine failure - have you got an idea of what exactly happened - has the timing belt broken or anything like that  Have you contacted Fontain about this at all? Maybe read up on your rights here, do your homework on sale of goods et al. Flippin shame! I'd keep the car though, its still a cracker.

, I will call around for you and try to help in sourcing an engine. Yours is a 1.4 TDI 75 right?

Shame your about 4 hours away from me to try and physically help you.

Don't get rid of it as it would be a good project to fix her up again.

Cheers

Bammers, so far, I have rang everyone that I had contacted during the rebuild of my Shoby Car, and no one has a diesel 1.4 engine available at the moment.

However I found these guys and have rang them

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/AUDI-A2-1-4-2...e_GL?hash=item1c0be1e974&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14

I rang them for you and they told me engine + fitting = £1695 inclusive
They give 6 months warranty and unlimited mileage.
They give 6 months parts and labour warranty as well. The car can be collected (probably at additional cost) by them for you unless you have AA or RAC and get them to do it for you.
He said the engines will be low milage and under 40k, how true this is, is anyones guess really.
They are based in East London somewhere. I spoke to a man called Osman his direct number is 0208 536 6683. PLEASE DOUBLE CHECK EVERYTHING if you decide to go down this route.

Please note, I have had no dealings with these people therefore please take all precautions as neccessary.

I guess the next step is to value your car as is, and see if the repair costs out strips the value? and if it IS worth fixing it.

In my honest opinion it is a lot of money at that price to throw at the car, and there's always that uncertainty as well.

In the meantime I shall continue searching for you!.

What is the spec/details of your car mate?

Cheers

Is there not anyone in your area that would recondition your engine ? many many years ago i use to do this but i think they are a dying industry now

I think if it was my own i would have ago at doing it myself, but i think i would have to be in your shoes for that.

Do you know what has actually happened to yours ??

Phil

update

Thanks for all the supportive messages peeps. We have a complaint lodged with audi who have assigned a man ... we awit a response from them.. Pending what they say we found an ad for a firm in London doing a replacement engine with 5 year guarantee.... possibly our best option. Thanks all again ...

Hi bammers.
My heart goes out to you. Just after we got our A2 in 2004 our 1.4 petrol engine blew up on me at 21000 miles. Timing belt pulley siezed at 60mph chucking the timing out and embedding valves in piston heads etc etc. Fortunately it happened 1 week before the 12mth warranty ran out. Dixon Ford who we bought the car from recovered it from our local Audi dealers saying their price for a new engine was too much even for warranty work. They in turn fitted a recon engine which they purchased from VEGE engines UK, who are based in Chesterfield, Derbyshire.
Not sure how much the engine was, but if you want VEGE engines UK details etc l can pass them on to you.
Our a2 was of the road for about 8wks. Had to wait for a recon engine to come from Holland.
Hope you get yours sorted sooner. All the best.
Bob.

wow, never heard of VEGE, but have bookmarked them as they are clearly the place to go should I ever need an engine!

anyone seen a 90bhp TDI engine floating around? There was one on the 'bay a few weeks back, would be interested to hear about sources....

thanks!

Bret
