Saw a nice bike rack for the A2 on the net. Suspect it's the OEM Audi one. Bikes are held at 45 deg above the back window. Has anyone seen or used on. Will pop to the local dealer but thought I'd ask here first.

I do have a conventional rack which attaches with straps but a bit scared of hanging it off the glass at the back.

Otherwise will have to look at a thule type roof rack.

Thanks

Rich

Sorry - had some kind of weird .asp hiccup. Can't see a delete thread, can a moderator delete all but one.

Thanks

Rich

The nice 45 degree one does not exist anywhere... Audi made a mock up but never made it... go and look at the top of your hatch and look at what this whole assembly was supposed to hang on: GLASS!!! And at the bottom magnets: that DON'T stick to aluminium...

Hence I bought the Thule rack - even though I have OpenSky... just do a search for roof rack and tick the Archive box and you'll get the post...

:( Couldn't really see how the 45 deg one would attach. Did look really nice though.

If it's generally accepted that the back door mounting racks hanging from the glass are a bad idea it will have to be Thule.

Thanks for the useful responses.

There is a bike rack for the back that has two small metal parts that attach to the sides of the rear hatch, but they seem to be permanently attached... I just saw an A2 driving around here with those things attached...

Bye, Frido.

Has anyone actually fitted any bike-rack to the rear of their A2 yet?

I havn't seen any officially listed, at all, anywhere!
Except once, but when questioned the manufacturers admitted it was a printing error, and removed it from the catalogue.

Halfords do an aluminium one which looks fairly versatile, and you can get toggle thingies for glass hatches, but I'm not sure if it would work.

A2's seem to have every possible obstacle to fitting:
no bumper-lip, high back, right-angle window, spoiler and glass edge at top!

There is a 3 bike rack listed on www.roofbox.co.uk that is listed for the A2 and it sits on the rear glass. It has metal legs and uses straps to secure it - it seems to be quite versatile and fits a lot of cars. It is the Pendle Strap On High Mount and has wond awards etc from some mags. I was just considering one and spoke to the company (who I have used and are excellent by the way - no connection) and he said it would fit no problem.

Is it possible Thule removed the A2 recommendation from their website?

I have a rear hanging bike rack on mine - its the Pendle carrier listed as suitable for an A2 on the roofbox.co.uk site. It does hook over the glass at the top but it took a while to work out how to secure it at the bottom. All these racks require straps that hook under the bottom lip of the boot, which on mine is too thick to let the metal hook correctly and appears to be made of bendy plastic so wouldn't hold it anyway. I eventually hooked the straps on the 45 degree 'cut-aways' on the side of the boot lip around the rear light clusters. If its done right it holds the rack very securely. I have to admit to being nervous about loading it too much with it hanging on the glass, but toughened glass should be fine as long as nothing punctures the surface tension, so I just keep it clean.

I have a picture if anyone needs to see it?

Hmmm interesting... though the roofbox website says for this carrier:

"This carrier sometimes requires the use of a special window adapter - where there is no metal at the top of the tailgate. The database will tell you if this is required. "

Though when you go to the database of cars it does not list a special bit for the A2 that most definately has a glass edged bootlid...

I far prefer the security of a roof mounted system A for when driving as it is locked in and B when you leave the car for a bit the bikes are also locked in place and C I can still get into my boot to get to all the paraphernalia that goes with a mountain bike...
