Bilstein B4s - An update

I have recently changed my Koni FSD front springs for new Koni Sports (yellow ones, adjustable), mainly because I wanted something less "soft".
Unfortunately, they also cause some lifting effect, but a little less than the FSD's did.

im thinking of going with the B4,s along with a set of H+R springs(25-30mm lower), has anybody got this combination??
only trouble is i keep hearing that shorter droplinks will be needed is this true???

Hi urban be aware H&R springs are hard springs. Comparable to original sport audi springs with more drop. cheers mike

Simon, what is your ride quality like before/after? i.e. is the primary ride (one-off big bumps) and secondary ride (frequent little bumps) any better or worse on your 15s?

To be honest I've experimented quite a lot recently with different wheels so it all seems to blur the memory a bit.
Perhaps I can answer better by mentioning what was said by a chum the other day. He first took a test ride with me on the day I had the B4s fitted (end of March) and he took another spin with me last week and noted that he thought things had "settled down" (he is a Mk1 Golf enthusiast) - this said however, not entirely happy with my 15" standard alloys (and enjoying the ride more on the 15" steel winter wheels which are 195 width - for me the 195 tyres on 15s LOOK a whole lot better) I bought some A3 wheels (6J with 195 tyres) which look smart in my opinion.
I digress, but my point is that perhaps my opinion will only be general and not specific to the standard 15" alloys, which I assume is what you're using.
So........one-off big bumps (ie speed humps you didn't manage to slow down for) only a slight improvement when mounting the hump, considerable improvement when descending. Secondary ride quality, not much change really....but let's manage expectations...I'm not driving a Jag, after all

cheers mike, has anybody come across springs with a similar drop but with say SE spec ride quality? how about eibachs do they supply for the A2??

No i made some plastic rings that fit under the "pur" rubber spring isolators on the rear axle.
Hi Mike,
do you know the approximate ratio ? (i.e. the raising height / your rings height)
And the diameter of the rings ?
I'm considering doing the same to match my front/rear wheels to wheelarches distance...
Thanks :)
Fabrice

Hi - did you go for this option - Bilstein+H&R is often a good match on other cars... A2's too?

thanks

I'm tempted to go the B4 route but had planned on sticking to OE springs -- I really like the handling of the A2 but dislike the ride over scarred roads (secondary bounce control?), how much softer are the Spidans? Running 17s my FSi is A LOT of fun in Snowdonia, wouldn't want to loose that by being roly-poly in the corners. Cheers.

Ref post 2 on this thread, H&R springs don't seem to work on A2s - http://www.a2oc.net/forum/showthrea...mpers-coilovers-and-airride&p=36420#post36420

Cheers Spike

We have these fitted on vonnies white tdi along with Monroe Reflex dampers and its great (hard but great) I first experienced them on Robins tdi90 and yes its hard but i liked it. So time has come to freshen the suspension on the storm so its again Monroes and H&R springs. If you like it firm then i recommend them. cheers mike

Yes my setup is quite firm for a car that spends a lot of time in and around the city, but when it comes to motorway driving it's very precise and controlled on 17''s making you think your in a much bigger car and not feeling like you have been shaken around when it comes to long journeys. 205/45/17's tyres make the world of difference to comfort and handling too.

Hello

I am also looking to have something more comfortable. Previous owner had put on OEM springs with SACHS shocks. Ride is firm. I dont like how it takes the potholes. I am looking for comfort, even at cost of loosing some handling.

I am somewhat set on Bilstein B4 shocks. Springs are still in search.

Bilstein sells "B3" springs for Audi A2 on german ebay. Does anyone have any experience with Bilstein B3 springs?

Good reviews on this forum on SPIDAN springs, two different spring models are listed to fit 1.4TDI. Another one is wound out of 9,75mm wire, whereas the other model is made oyt of 10,25mm wire. I don't know which one to choose if I happen to take a swing with Spidan springs.

Little help would be much appreciated. Thank you.

EDIT - I am not looking for lowering the suspension. I wish to retain the OEM ride height. I wish to have as much shock stroke as I can.

I wish to maximise the comfort. I do understand it is going to cost me in the "handling" department. Not to worry, this is not a race car, not a "track day" car. This is a daily commuter, in which I do obey the speed limits (pretty much 97% of the time).
