Blasting in cold air after a short stop!

Is it just mine or do all Climatronic AC systems give you a few minutes of cold air after you've stopped for a while (eg. filling up with fuel) and then going again? This is the case even after the engine is already warm and could be after many miles of driving... I sometimes dread getting back in from the cold as I know the car is now going to blast me with some nice cold air though it is -5 degrees outside! How inconsiderate! :(

I noticed something similar today when I stopped briefly in an A2 infested car park: 18 degrees outside, 20 degrees on the ECC with it set to ECON (due to OpenSky being... er... Open) and the car rewarded me with several minutes of cooling. I thought that ECON prevented it from attempting to cool...?

I would guess that this might be to do with the internal temp sensor for the ECC. This could rely on a flow of air to constantly get a current temp reading. When the car has been off or stationery, perhaps the air gets hot/stagnant in the 'duct' or wherever the sensor is and hence it needs to build up the re-circ. air flow again or something? This is a 'shot in the dark', but might make sense?

Makes a wholel ot of sense... a few minutes after moving again it is fine...

BUT why does this then not happen when you're at a standstill in heavy traffic with heater on as well?

The air isn't static when in traffic as you have the blower on so is recirc.. itself.

The sensor sits behind the small grill on the CC unit and should have a small fan to draw air in-and dust etc.

Worth hoovering out the duct now and again to keep the sensor as clean as possible.

You sometimes hear the fan whining down when you switch the engine off and the car is quiet.

hmmm... I've heard this noise when I stop the car before... not loud enough to be the main fan as on some cars that work after switching off... and also only really heard in winter when the heater was on. Thanks for explaining that one!

Hi Johann,

What mode is the CC unit in when this happens? Auto? This is quite strange. If, as you said, this happens even after the engine is warm, then this makes no sense. All of the air coming into the cabin goes through the Heater matrix, which means it will get warm (if the engine is warm that is). Could you let me know the exact condition of the cc settings?

Ade - I dont think your guess is correct. Basically the system does not monitor instant changes in the sensor temmperature. It takes the average temp over a pre-determined time to ensure short temp changes (due to abnormal circumstances) do not cause any problems.

Cheers

Kaine

Kaine: Only a guess after all, makes sense to have some sort of aggregation or it would be blowing and stopping all the time...

It is in Auto and set to 22 deg or so... fan usually only 2 or 3 digits then as the relative temp has been reached... Stop for fuel, get back in and cold fresh outside air gets blasted in for a while... Do other people's not do this then?
