The thick pillars never bothered me until yesterday when I nearly ran over a man in his 50s or 60s in a multistorey car park in Portsmouth.
He was on foot and should not have been crossing (he hadn't looked) and a collision would probably have "only" been a bruised/cracked leg. I was only doing about 7-8 mph. But if he hadn't taken last minute evasive action I might actually have hit him - it was close and not a bit worrying as I had been concentrating fully and had not seen him at all.
I am a bit worried about this blind spot now as far as pedestrians are concerned and will adjust my driving in places like towns/multistoreys accordingly.
This is the first and hopefully last time I encounter this problem. But I had not appreciated just how big a blind spot the driver's pillar creates.
