Boost cut out on cold engine, accelerating uphill.

Hello again, everyone!

Just want to pick some brains. I have an '02 1.4tdi 75hp and have been getting issues with the turbo occaisionally going on strike causing a total loss of boost.
It seems to happen when the engine hasn't been running long and when I'm pulling uphill. There are no warning lights that come on when it happens but the performance becomes agricultural until I can pull over and stop the engine and restart it. Once I do everything becomes hunky dory again.

Any pearls of wisdom would be greatly appreiciated. The community was a great help with my window frame and regulator replacment.

Thanks in advance :D

HI, this is very common issue, it could be a boost leak where the turbo doesnt present the ecu with epxected boost and power is cut via limp mode for safety.

I would try and get vcds scan on there and see what pops up, you can also monitor boost pressures expected vs actual pressues. The turbo does this with variable vane turbos when the aperture does move correctly and boost levels go haywaire. THe tdi isnt VNT so this is likely either a boost leak in one of the fine pipes or the intercooler etc.

Just will take time and effort to find it but likely an easy fix.

How many miles are on the turbo?

Well I think the turbo has 130,000 miles on it and i was told that the 75hp tdi doesnt have variable vanes in the turbo. i may be mistaken there.
I did do a Revive turbo clean out a few months ago that seems to have improved the situation a bit. Certainly made a lot of smoke lol.

Getting it scans sounds like a good shout. Hopefully a code or two will narrow it down a bit.

Thanks :D

Just FYI the fuel filter issue will show no codes - so that can be a big clue.

I had this occasionally when my intercooler started to split. There weren't any fault codes coming up and it would rectify itself after a restart. I was fortunate that I was able to see the split between the bottom of the intercooler and the core when I looked down in front of the engine. Might be worth a look round at the intercooler and pipes to see if you've got a boost leak.

Ah that's worth a look, thanks :D
