Braking problem

Hi !! Thought I'd just ask if anyone has experienced braking problems with their A2. Just lately I have been experiencing really bad juddering through the steering wheel when braking from 40mph plus. The car is an early 2001 base model 1.4 petrol but has only clocked up 15000 miles

Could it be a balancing or brake disc/pad problem? If it's the latter any idea of costs?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

With winter coming on, and the weather getting worse, I'd get it checked out by a dealer if I were you.

It could be either of the parts you state, or it could be a tracking problem or a suspension problem or even a steering fault. In any case, the price of repair shouldn't be too high - a replacement of both discs and pads for the front end will probably set you back about £250 including labour - a lot less if you can do it yourself.
You might find that it's a warranty item, in which case it'll be free (after a bit of negotiation probably). But if it's a late model 2001, better get your skates on!

I have similar problem, perhaps not as bad. I only done 10K. Surely discs/pads should last longer then that.

I don't know what material VAG discs are made of but they are prone to warping due to lack of use. My brother had his Golf's front discs replaced under warranty within 12 months because they had warped. The reason given was the very low mileage (2,000).

Given Chris and Peter's relatively low miles I wouldn't be surprised if the front discs have warped.

I've heard of brake discs becoming warped by driving enthusiastically to the automatic car-wash. The nicely hot brakes then get sprayed with cold water and warp them! But A2s and car automatic car-washers is another thread altogether!

Thanks guys. Really useful advice. I think I'll avoid the Audi dealership this time though as my warranty has expired and I don't think much of their exorbitant labour charges.

Kwik Fit here I come !! BUT will their pattern brake discs and pads be OK ??

Cheers

I understand that brake discs can be warped by drivers who generally keep their foot on the brake pedal when stationary (at traffic lights for instance) after just using the brakes vigorously. So the discs and pads are both are hot after alot of action. NOT GOOD FOR THE BRAKES!
Beware of this when sitting at junctions/traffic lights etc, and use the handbrake.

Thanks for the advice. I am guilty of keeping my foot on the brakes at traffic lights. Re-training myself to use the handbrake from now on!! Would any of you recommend the likes of Kwik Fit or National Tyres to replace discs and pads on my A2 or do you think Audi franchise is the only way to go ?

Thanks.

I've found Kwik Fit to be very expensive when ringing around previously so would never use them as a point of principal. Don't know about National Tyres. If I wasn't using the Franchised Dealer then I'd always look up an independent specialist. There's bound to be a VAG specialist near you.

Keeping your foot on the brake whilst stationary! Argh....the blinding light[13]

Another reason to use the handbrake! After a hard day at the office the last thing I want to do is sit in rush hour traffic with brake lights glaring at me..gives me a headache and I start turning green and breaking out of my shirt....[:p]

Sorry, just going off on one!

May not be warped, if not used a great deal you can get rust build ups on the discs and this can give the same effect. Discs can be skimmed (normally made over size).

Also if you can change a wheel then there is little more to changing pads and discs, caliper should disconnect from hub without disconnecting the pipes and there is normally only one screw holding the disc on! - but the A2 may be different.

I had a similar problem with my A2 SPORT that I purchased with 10k on the clock. This was caused by corrosion of the discs. Car may have been left standing for a long period of time?

Runboy, so you're the one behind me when I drive my automatic, and keep my foot on the brake at lights etc. It's a lot of hard work applying the handbrake and shifting to N, then doing it all over again to move off. Phew!! I was told my Volvo was automatic, but I still have to go with it. The old 'uns are best, but maybe not that one.

A quick update - got new brake discs and pads from Eurocarparts in Stevenage (£90 inc VAT). Fitted for £50 !! A lot cheaper than the Audi dealership.. Result - Problem sorted. Must have been warped discs after all. Pads weren't that badly worn. Having discs skimmed wasn't an option as too pricey and hardly anyone has the necessary equipment to do it anyway.

Glad you got to the bottom of it.

[7]Pads not too badly worn............
I hope you changed them too!

Our 02 1.4TDI has similar problem and am resigned to new discs & pads. Either from the dealer (a little warranty left) or with Brembo 09.7011.10 or Brembo Max 09.7011.75. Any observations or which Pads to use?

Thanks

I've just fitted the Brembo 09.7011.10 on the front of ours (£68) with greenstuff pads (www.brakes4u.co.uk) £40 ish with online discount. Fantastic! they've now bedded in and i'm peeling myself off the windscreen.
I did the work myself - real easy. You'll need a 7mm hex driver to undo the caliper.
