Chat Bye Bye A2

Yeti crowned

Hi Johann
First of all, congrats on your soon to be new car. Good choice.
I've read many a post from you, so sorry to see you leave the
A2 club later. In the Netherlands the Skoda Yeti 1.2 TSI (!) was crowned Caravan Towcar
of 2010 overall (hope that's good english). Commented was the rasorsharp steering and best evasive manouvre handling. So if your camping"fetish" is getting worse :),
you're in a good league!
I wish you many happy Yeti miles.
Cheers, Gumbold

Baie dankie Gumbold, maar 'n karavaan gaan ek nie koop nie!

I will be getting a towbar on the Yeti but it will be to fit a bike rack and little more! The Yeti will be a bit tall to easily get that third bike in. The A2 is already a stretch!

Any news on when/ how you'll be selling the A2 as I might have an interested party...

You're not getting one in for the nipper are you????

Now that it's pretty common to have 2 x A2 in a household, you're getting one up on everyone else?

Cheers,

Mike

Johann, you'll have a big piece of tupperware with windows and a toilet being pulled behind your Yeti before you know it.

Erm no I don't think so. I might go for an Ifor Williams. But I'll rent them and just put stuff in it! But NO caravans here thank you.

I suspect the wait is down to your exacting specification - I've seen a few around and they are very appealing indeed.

My wait is to do with the sunroof being in very, very low supply. They have now taken the sunroof completely off the spec and you can't (for the time being) order a new Yeti with a sunroof!!! So they are only building a few per month and the RHD cars have to wait for the RHD slot AND a sunroof. Grrr.

I saw on the new Audi A1 brochure in the small print the following:

"New car delivery
Once we’ve confirmed a delivery date for your car, we’ll keep you informed of progress. Subject to reasonable notice, we’ll then deliver it to a place of your choice, whether that’s your home or place of work. In the unlikely event of a delay, we’ll provide a courtesy car to minimise inconvenience and keep you mobile."

Does Skoda have this clause?! Nope. So no courtesy car for me even though they have kept me in the dark and the delivery went from 16 weeks to 28 weeks. (4 months to 7).

Well I've been very lucky. A friend decided he will buy it! So unless things change on that front (or he gets impatient before NOVEMBER) the car is basically sold. But I will come to this forum first if anything changes promise.

Sorry I can't do this weekend's camping, but keep me in the loop with any other A2OC events before November.

One thing is for sure, Johan won't be learning to drive in Daddy's classic A2 (which I have owned for 5 years today and will have owned for 21 years when he is 17!!!)

I love the definitive statement that you'll be cherishing ULP 16 years from now - A2s are keepers and Tank will hopefully be with me and still going strong in 2026!!! (If we can still get diesel then!?)

Cheers,

Mike

Yes you are probably right Chris. But I quoted that to Skoda UK and they replied that they will compensate me with "some gesture of Goodwill". I might get a free cuddly Yeti toy I bet! I'd rather have the tow-bar free!

Well yesterday was the day. Seven month wait for a Skoda. Gosh. But what a car.

2010 Yeti 2,0 TDI 140 Elegance DSG 4x4 in Steel Grey with Onyx interior

Factory options:
Sunroof
Park assist
Tyre Pressure Monitor
Upgraded Sound (how sweet. That is the name even on the speakers!)
Electric driver's seat
Spare wheel

Other options:
Towbar
Winter wheel set
Mud flaps
Skoda roof bars
Ashtray (for coins only!)
Two rubber boot mats
20cm Audio lead
150cm Audio lead
Rubber floor mats
Parcel shelf net
Warning triangle
Boot covers
Stubby aerial

Even though the Yeti is just over 4,2 meters in length - and thus Golf sized, coming from an A2 it sure is a lot bigger. Especially inside. And I'm really glad I waited for that sunroof. What a difference it makes to that all black interior.

I have lots of new toys. The best ones are the cornering Bi-Xenons (meaning both dip and main beam are Xenon) - even driving in well lit central London I was amazed by the pure white light, the DSG gearbox, and the audio system with upgraded sound. An Audi BOSE it ain't but the ease and amount of mediums of music you can use is amazing. I dragged and dropped some MP3 files on an SD card and plugged it in. It played them straight away and shows the album titles etc. The 6 disc front loader can play audio and MP3 files as well. Then there is the Bluetooth (it synced effortlessly with my iPhone and imported the entire phone book to the car). Then once you press play on a playlist or track the BT Audio button on the radio goes live and my pressing that you stream your music via Bluetooth to the car. Dead easy. And I've not even plugged anything into the 3,5mm audio jack under the central armrest!

I also got an electric driver's seat. Fantastic for two drivers. Each driver's key can store 3 seat positions together with the mirror positions, the climatronic and all the car setup settings. So as you walk up your seat is set, the alarm won't chirp, the rear wiper won't intermittent wipe or whatever just as you like it. On the other key the car can chirp and what not. Fantastic. Especially of one person is 6'6" and the other 5'2" or something.

Then there is the Park Assist. WOW! I was amazed at how well it worked and how easy it was to do it. Especially with a DSG. Trick is to wait for the car to finish steering before you move off. Just like if you were driving it. When we came home last night there was this spot between our MX-5 and the Citroën (see first pic below) that I would not have attempted in a new car. My A2 would have just fitted but in a new bigger car like the Yeti? Nope. The Park Assist did it in three moves! Back, forward, back, forward, done. AMAZING! And during all that my hands were on my legs.

And here are some pics of the radio setup:

And if you are wondering why it shows km/h in that screen too it is because the main speedometer does not have ANY kmh marking and by law there should be some from of knowing how fast you are driving on the Continent so they added that little km/h digital display. It is however impossible to change it to mph/h! Grrr.

The SD card screen:

Sounds very nice indeed! Funnily enough I was reading this weeks Autocar longterm report on their Yeti (1.2TFSi) and came to the conclusion it would make a good A2 replacement. Will be interested to read what mpg you get from that set-up.

I notice the absence of a screened blind inside the OpenSky - is there a retractable one or is there just not one at all? I keep toying with the idea of removing mine, mainly to make the view from the back seats more "Open" for my two boys...

Morning. There is a blind. It retracts electrically. You'll notice it on the rear seat pic still with the blue wrapping over the aluminium nosing! It also has a mind of its own on cold nights. When you get back in the car in the morning the blind is always closed! During the night it seems to sense the cold and then decide to close for some reason. No-one on the Yeti forum knows why.

Taking out the blind in my A2 was the best thing I ever did. It brings in SOOO much more light especially in the back since you don't have TWO blinds on top of each other. They whole thing clipped out in 2 minutes flat. http://www.a2oc.net/forum/showthread.php?t=1797

When you took the A2's internal blind out did you do it from inside, or from above (ie with the roof open)?

Dan: I did it from inside. I'm sure there are "proper" threads about it on here since I remember seeing before and after pictures. So search for blind but BEFORE the date of my post (2004).

Cheers. I've got to give my car some attention this weekend (fit heated mirrors and winter tyres), so I just might have a go at this as well...

It is very easy to do all those. I did the mirrors too and they were as easy! And you will LOVE the Opensky sans the screens. Totally LOVE it.
