Cam Belt change

Hello all,

I wondered if anyone can advise the cost of a replacement Cam Belt for my 02 plate TDI (75) ? I am coming up to 60k miles and need to get it done in the next two weeks. I have provisionally booked it in with an Audi main dealer but they have advised that it will be £480. Including the main service this will mean a bill of at least £700, which is a bit scary this close to Christmas.

Any replies gratefully received. Otherwise I may be posting a Kidney for sale!

Cheers

My stealer quoted me £390, just goes to show they charge what they wish. An independent VW/Audi specialist has quoted me £240 using original Audi parts. Even at that price I am having to wait until payday!

Chris
PS The stealer quoted me £340 for the service leaving me sweating at a potential total of £730. The independent has undertaken the serive for £199 which included £50 for the longlife oil alone.

Chelsea boy, how much for the kidney? The Surgeon took one of mine!!! I would get a VW dealer to put it in.

It does seem a silly price for some of these jobs though. Mt independant makes a very good living at £40 per hour, and charges are usualy considerably less than the main dealer. Unfortunately the A2 is not a car he would work on due to the non availability of diagnostic software. Even my VW dealer says he can't get access to the software....seems strange.

I was charged £450 by the dealer. My local trusted mechanic could not do it as he had only 2 of the NINE special tools needed to do the job according to his servicing bible... A VW/AUDI specialist is the best route or perhaps a Skoda dealer as mentioned elsewhere? Do you get Skodas with the 1,4 Tdi 3 cyl? I guess you do...

Remember that dealer labour rates vary across the country and you can get a weekend away on the difference in labour rates on some jobs ;-)

I got a 60K service and Cam belt change done in Plymouth last month by the Audi dealer here. Approx cost inc VAT Cam belt parts : £87.00, fitting £290, Long Life service £300. Nice total. Quoted me £219 for a spare wheel - without tyre, declined!

Puzzled! I had a 60K service done at Tonbridge Audi a few months back - no mention of needing a cambelt change! But then, we've had this discussion before.....

I had to tell my dealer as well to do it... they don't offer to do it they want you to make the warranty lapse...

But on variable servicing it also comes up roughly 4000 miles BEFORE the second service... So not well timed at all!

My local dealer,Maidstone Audi, had quoted £584 for a cambelt replacement, including tensioner and roller. After I picked myself up off their nice carpeted floor I decided to do the job myself.

Well done for actually managing to get an answer out of them. I've been in/phoned several times recently to ask about a brake fluid change & either walked out after sitting around twiddling my thumbs for 15 mins or been promised a phone call back - which never materialised.

No warranty involved with my car - over 3 years old, so they could have gained themselves some business if they had mentioned it. Can't see why they wouldn't have.... unless they are working to an 80K change point.

Hello all,

Further to my recent post I have now resolved my cam belt issue. After several suggestions to try a VW dealer I rang one up and got a quote for £510 for the cam belt change and 60k service (they based this figure on an equivalent Polo!). I then phoned the Audi dealership I had previously booked it into and advised I wanted to cancel. The service manager asked why I was cancelling and if I had got a cheaper quote elsewhere. I explained that the VW dealer 10 miles up the road had quoted £200 less than him and I would be taking it there.

The Audi dealer then asked if I would keep the booking with them if they agreed to match the price (subject to him confirming the quote with VW, which he subsequently did). I took it in on Saturday morning and picked it up tonight. They had carried out the work as requested and the bill was exactly £510 as agreed. They had also given the car a full valet and made her sparkle.

I always tend to slag off Audi dealers as generally they are incompetent and try to rip us off whenever they get the chance (see Northampton Audi). However my experience this week goes to show that all they have to do to make us happy is do the work as promised, stick to the price quoted (a reasonable price) and get a chamois leather out.

I am now a happy boy again!

P.S. Some or all of the above may have been due to the fact that when I first phoned the Audi dealer I told him I had been recommended to them by another customer of theirs. This was a complete lie that I often tell when using a company I have not previously used, as this can often make them more attentive as they run the risk of upsetting two customers in one go.

I agree with your actions, but.......it should not be necessary to haggle with a prestige brand. prices should be quoted and on display (see almost any other main dealers). Then haggle!!!

I agree with Holyrescue - the prices at our local Mazda dealer were always up on a wall display for everyone to see. Now, there was an outfit who understood good customer care!

I tried that with 2 Audi dealers - Ridgeway Audi simply couldn't match the Bath price though - they wanted an extra £150 for the exactly the same service. Daft - I'll stick with Bath.

was in the VW dealer yesterday, getting my A2 serviced, they told me there had been a new notification from VW, with respect to cambelts. They original for some of their cars was 80,000 they have apparently revised this to 60,000.
