Cambelt change.....when ?

I'm looking for the definative answer as to when to change the cambelt on a 1.4 Tdi 04' plate A2.

I'm getting conflicting answers from the dealer and awaiting an answer form AUDI technical services - any help from here would be gratefully appreciated.

As I understand it for the TDI, the cambelt change should be at 80K miles or every four years, whichever is the soonest.

Makes sense to change the water pump at the same time. I had my cambelt changed last year at 47K miles / 5 years and it was showing some signs of wear.

It depends on the engine type my 01 TDi is an AMF engine which is every 60k.Identify your engine and you will find your cambelt interval. All the info you need is in your owners manual that came with the car.On the inside cover of one of the books is a sticker with all your ratings, kerbside weight ,engine type etc.Once you have your engine type contact the dealer and they will provide interval changes.:)Hope this helps.

i would recommend getting it changed at around 60-80k

mine was never changed by the local garage and had done 103k miles
but had some serious wear....thanks to my local independent VW specialist he looked at the belt whilst car was in for a service..and told me the bad news it had never been changed

There are 2 type of engines in the A2 1.4 TDI (55 kw!). From 1999 till (sept?) 2003 it is the AMF type engine which needs a cambelt change every 90.000 KM (60.000 miles) and the BHC type engine fitted after (sept?) 2003 with an interval of 120.000 KM (75.000 miles).

Audi did not change the interval for the AMF type engine. It's still 60.000 miles!!! The new type engines have the longer interval.

Maurice

Reply from Audi Technical Services

I thought I'd share this reply I got from Audi UK regarding the cambelt change interval on my A2. They checked the chassis number for my car and this is what they came back with.
I also had it susequently confirmed verbally - as I followed up the email query by calling the Technical department today.

Hope it helps. Here goes :

"Dear Mr R........

Thank you for your e mail dated 2 May 2008, regarding the service and cambelt on your A2. Please accept my apologies for the delay in replying.

I have spoken to the Technical Department who advise that the cambelt requires changing before 80,000 miles and the cambelt and tensioner will require changing before 160,000 miles. The vehicle needs servicing every two years or 20,000 miles.

I hope this information is helpful and if you have any further queries please contact the Customer Services Department on the telephone number below.

Kind regards

Just an obsevation I booked my Yreg A2 1.4 Petrol in for a cambelt change @ 7yrs 40K miles . Trouble was about 3 days before I had the classic DIS over temp signal. Limped to the gararage (local dealer not Audi main agent) Water pump toast bits in the bottom of the cam belt case. Result £700 bill.

So the moral is if it says change it and or you have the inclination do it , whatever you do dont wing it and carry on as big bills will surely come.

Having done some evaluation work for a belt manufacturer, I thought it might be interesting to apply some belt life factors to actual applications, as the vehicle manufacturers recommendations seem to be so inconsistent.

My formula works like this:

Take a petrol engine with a belt working under ideal conditions, ie correctly tensioned, no oil, no disintegrating idlers. Take a belt base life of 60,000 miles.

Now apply the following factors as multipliers:

Crank pulley teeth (half cam pulley number) 19t 0.7; 20t 0.9; 21t 1.0; 22t 1.05.

Next, apply the following factors as multipliers:

Fixed tensioner 1.0; Undamped sprung tensioner 0.8; 3/4 wide belt 0.75;
1 wide belt 1.0; Diesel engine 0.85.

As an example, the old Ford CVH 1.4 engine had 19 teeth on its crank pulley (0.7), a fixed tensioner (1.0), and a 3/4 wide belt (0.75).

Bit of a dumb Q's how can I tell if mine is a AMF or BHC unit the car is a 2004/54 1.4 tdi, the reson is when i brought the car they told me it was the 90hp unit car ins say its 75hp What Car say they changed the units at the beggining of 2004:confused:

Mine has nearly 50,000 miles not full audi history so best I change it?

I feel a bit stupid asking because i work in the trade but I know nothing about engines only the basics:eek::eek:

If your car has rear disc brakes and a red I on the TDI badge its a 90, otherwise its a 75. the 90 was sold from September 2003 onwards, but this was in addition to, not instead of the 75. Theres much debate about cambelt change intervals. I stick to 60k/5 years for my own peace of mind regardless of manufacturers recommendations - ours is being done soon ('04 plate car with 55k miles)

Thanks murdo,

With what you have told me mine is the 75hp unit, I'll get mine changed in a couple of months. On audis website they are quoting £329

Even though its the 75 unit still quicker than my old A150 and alot more economical:)

Its an A2 - therefore its a brilliant car! A remap on your 75 and it'll be a rocket too! Remember its wise to change the water pump at the same time as the cambelt. An Audi independant should do the lot for around the figure you quoted.

A re map you say:D how much £ does it affect the emisions (loving the £35 VED) how much more bhp whats the 0-62

Sorry should have searched a thread on here, New to this

BHC has wider cambelt than AMF that is why BHC has longer change periods

I'm sure the AMF, ATL and BHC engine models all use the same cambelt so there must be other reasons why the change period is different

Cheers Spike

If there is someone who can translate this, we can find an answer.
