Hi All

I am in the middle of my cambelt change 1.4 TDI jan 03 AMF engine code i cannot see the mark/notch on the oil seal housing i have set the camshaft to give me an idea of TDC i can see the notch on the crankshaft pulley i have Autodata which indicates a notch on the oil seal housing around 11 oclock but i cannot see it can anyone help Thanks Ken

Not sure if I am reading yo correctly but there is no alignment mark behind the crankshaft sprocket. The alignment is set by the pin on the toothed locking plate which locates in a hole on the engine cover. Just match up the marks on the sprocket and locking plate before locating the pin.

Cheers Spike

For more info there is a thread on cambelt replacement in the 'how to' section of the forum. It mainly coveres the 90 tdi but other links within the thread may be helpful

Hello Spike

Yes there is no alignment notch/mark behind the crankshaft pulley (Autodata shows notch/mark on aluminium front crank oil seal housing around 11oclock which there is not) so i have aligned the camshaft to the 4mm locking hole and the 3Z on the sprocket hub behind the toothed camshaft pulley so once i lock the crankshaft with the locking tool is that TDC? or where the crankshaft needs to be Thanks Ken

Hi Ken
I have an old Autodata diagram which shows the outline of crankshaft locking tool in position. A small arrow in the 11oclock position points to an alignment mark on a tooth of the crank pulley. If you unscrew the knob on the locking tool there should be a mark/dot which a aligns with mark on the crank pulley tooth. I'm guessing the arrow is causing the confusion because its on the tool (hidden by the knob) and not behind the crank pulley.

Hi Spike
Well i do feel a fool, yes you are correct the mark is on the locking tool I am a mechanic from around 20 years ago and there was always a mark on the pulley and the housing, now i look closely at autodata there is a feint outline of the locking tool with a mark on it behind the locking pin and yes there is a arrow on the crank pulley in a groove from one of the bolt holes Once again thank you for your assistance (Theres no substitute for experience) Ken

Hi Ken
I know exactly how you feel as I struggled with the same thing. Not sure if your engine model has the spring loaded hydraulic tensioner but I also had problems locking off the plunger tip. I eventually worked out the small locking tool with forked end (item 13 om my Autodata manual)) goes through a slot in the cambelt housing from the bulkhead side of the engine - more info in this thread - http://www.a2oc.net/forum/showpost.php?p=69154&postcount=2
