Can't Fold Down rear seats . . .

Had an A2 for about a year and for the first time this morning we tried to fold down the rear seats and we could'nt. Its a two rear seater split down the middle with ISO fix fitted.

The catches do pull up but do not seam to release anything.

Looking at the catch from the bootside there is a plastic sleeve over the metal square pins. The metal sqaure pin i guess is supposed to withdraw upwards clear of the catch. Accordinng to the user manual the catch also has to positions to alter the angle, i can't even do that.

It does'nt . . .

Is this a known problem or are we doing something really dumb.

Please help . . .

i had this problem before. is it both seats? the problem with myn wos that wen i slamed the bottem of the seat down into the two hols only 1 of the pins cliped in at the botem. then i locked the top of the seat into place and after that the seat wouldnt unlock at the top. in the end i had to cut the bracket at the top of the seat to get it free, then i just brought a new seat lock and bracket. but maybe some one els will no a nother way around this

also if you have the same problem as me ur seat will be on a slight tilt you may notice it at the bottem of the seat

Thank for the replies.

i have read through the links and as far as i can see they talk in great detail about the lower part of the seat either not fitting back in or be fitted incorrectly resulting in the mechanism misaligning and the fix being with the seatback down put your knee on apllying downwards pressure to align the pins etc. . .

All good info but i can't even get my seat backs down to carry out this 'knee' procedure.

Both entire seats do look slighly crooked though !!!!!

Any more hints would be highly appreciated. . .

thats wot happend to myn, wot i think hapens is one pin at the bottem locks in and one dont. then maybe once the seat locks up right you cant unlock it as the tention on the locks at the bottem arent even or like me not realising you forced the seat over onto the top catch, if that makes any sense, maybe try an audi dealer and see if they no of some way to free them or maybe some one here can tell you away of unlocking it. or like me the only way around it is to cut the bracket that the square pin locks into then buy a new bracket. the bracket is metal not plastic as it looks its hard to get to to cut, i done myn at work with an air saw but it is easy to damage (scratch) the plastic trim on the side of the seat and around the bracket hope this helps and good luck

oh yes and once you have fixed it make sure you always make sure the bottem springs are clipped in correctly to prevent this happening again

From what you've written it seems that you've not managed to pull the seat-back release handle(s) up fully. I've had similar difficulties with both my previous and current A2s. Basically you have to keep trying, pulling up on the handle whilst joggling the seat back until it releases. Hopefully it will release eventually. Once freed, spray some 3-in-1 oil into the catch mechanism and leave the seat in the folded forward position to let it permeate with gravity assistance. Make sure the square pin is locked in its retracted position, with only the plastic release trigger protruding before you clip it back upright.

Next time you release the seat it should be a lot easier.

I can pull the catch up slightly, i would say i can see approx 1cm of red on the front of the catch.

I have had a good waggle of the seat but it ain't coming out !!!!

My concern know is that because the seats do not look like there sitting correctly in the car, slightly twisted towards the centre is it safe. I have a child seat in the back !!!!

Is it safe? I have a child seat in the back !!!!

Whether you are using the seat belt or isofix, the child seat will be secured independant of the car seat. However, theres a chance that the seat back could become insecure in the event of a collision if its not seated properly, and this would be hazardous to your wee one. I'd get it looked at. If you have tried the advice on here and no joy, I'd ring your local VW/Audi specialist and see what they have to say.

You say you can see 1cm of red. I've just checked ours and with the catch fully up you can see 2.5cm of red, so it's definitely not coming up fully.

If you can't pull the seat back forwards it's probably safe, but best to get it looked at by a dealer as murdo says.

Before you do that, see if you can spray some WD40 up into the catch from inside the boot and try pulling up the catch again, maybe with an assistant so you can look at what's going on in the boot.

the seat will not come un done, ist quite safe the top is jamed so it will never unlock on its own free will (with out a pull) the bottem could well come undone in an acident but unlikely and the top isnt goin anywhere. dont force the top any more thane you are, it wont help. all it will do is snap the metal pull bar out of the plastic on the lock and then youll have to buy a new lock also, iv done it! best thing is see wot audi can come up with. if not cut the bracket! ther not expesive and as soon as you have cut it of the handle will pull and unlock, the seat will fold forward and work fine.
