as for the 12V socket you need to push the silver bit through the orange bit (out the top side) you will need the squeeze the 2 spring clips (these hold the lighter in place when depressed) and push firmly

This has got me stumped. The silver clips that hold the lighter in place - squeezed and pushed like hell, but no movement at all. They just seem to bend out of shape if you squeeze too hard. Is it likely that they've changed the design of the lighter (clutching at straws now). Did you use pliers to squeeze?

Well bu~~er me, just tried one last time and gave it a bash with the hammer and it came out. Brute force seemed to work in the end. Just going to fit the new part now.

Congrats.. Ade.
I was pulling on the silver bit for quite a while until I relised you needed to push :)

The only tool I used was a small flat screwdriver.

I received my centre tray on Saturday and set about installing it.
Had some difficulty with the 12v socket but eventually removed it and inserted it into the new hump.
However, despite removing the four lugs the tray would not sit flat.
Tried removing all areas which were higher than the sticky tape but still the tray felt loose.
Eventually realized that the spring clip next to the 12v socket was not engaging.
Very disappointed, emailed Martyn this mrning to discuss what I do next....

I only cut the 4 big lugs off around the edge of the tray and the 4 in the centre of the tray.

Did you use the fitting guide?

Copy and paste of a mail I just sent David....

--------------------------

Hi David.

If I remember right, the left side one engaged properly, but the right side
did not at first on mine at least. I think my cable was not tied, but I also
remember that it would not engage whilst the number plate fixers were in
place to start with. It also took a bit of pressure to push it down.

Not sure how to proceed, but I would try the following:

1) Push hard and ensure it is guided to the right place (I guess you've
tried this though).

2) Remove the sticky pads and try again. If this works then you know the
cable is not to blame and you can then try to seat them at a better
location. I have mine down the sides of the console rather than across for
example...

3) If that doesn't work then perhaps untie the cable tie and try again.

4) If that doesn't work then I don't know. Are you coming to the social?
Perhaps someone could take a look then?

I finally fitted the tray last night. After removing the old fixers,I then tried the tray again but it still would not sit properly. So in desperation,I removed all the protusions from underneath the tray so the bottom was completely flat and hey presto it finally clicked in place with a far bit of force.
I then placed the fixers on the underneath of the tray so that they were pointing from gearstick to handbrake rather than across ways and stuck it down.Well pleased. Thanks to Ade and Martyn at VAG for their advice.

David,

On the underside of the tray were there curved ribs across the tray?

Yes it did.
I was not sure if these were at fault but reasoned that if there was nothing on the bottom of the tray it would lie flat on the number plate fixers....

Hi Dave, glad to help. I didn't need to remove the ribs on mine, but did need to push hard. Again, not sure if the orientation of the strips really was the key or not since I put them in the wrong place as I tried for the last time and once I had it in I didn't want to remove it to try across ways....

Fitted my tray today!

That lighter is a real b****r to get out isn't it?
Managed in the end with brute force - a few whacks with a hammer did the trick (with something protecting the white plastic).

I could only get 6mm sticky fixers which is clearly wrong as it doesn't sit horizontal so I'll have to revisit it when I can get hold of an alternative as it is not very secure at the moment at that one end.

Are you coming to the club social?

Stuart, I remember posting about the cigarette lighter! I too needed a hammer!

Re the sticky pads, when they were across ways it was too high at the front, hence I put them inline down the sides instead. This did the trick for me.

I know - it was your posting that gave me the confidence to get the hammer out!
I'll try what you suggest with the sticky pads.
