Climate control fan problem..

I am new to this great forum as I have just bought an A2 1.2 TDI. It runs great and is amazingly economical.. It does have a problem with the climate control however..

The fan seems to have taken a life of its own.. It just goes up and down in speed complete randomly and with no relation to temp, auto, econ, engine temp or other functions. It often goes up to full speed for a bit, then slows down, goes up to full speed again, turns off and then starts all over.. But most of the time when it is on, it will go to full speed which is both nosy and annoying. It doesn't matter if I turn the fan speed down manually, it still does its own thing regardless.

Everything else seems to work fine and it will hold the preset temperature. Its just the fan that goes nuts and cycles up and down on its own, sometimes only a few seconds at each speed, but mostly up to full speed as mentioned.. Has anyone else experienced this.?

Is it most likely the control panel itself, or are there other sensors that controls the fan speed.?

Thanks - Alex.

I've not heard of this and sorry I'm no tech however logic would suggest that if the fan is changing speed on the auto setting this would be a sensor issue as the unit is working to reach a temperature the car is telling itself isn't anywhere close ( even though the temperature doesn't fluctuate you say)

I've never actually heard of the climate panel being faulty.

I'd suggest having a diagnostic scan done for fault codes and maybe also checking the condition of the pollen filter.

I had a similar problem on my previous A2, I took the fan unit out, had a fiddle and a bit of a Hoover out, it seemed that the brushes were worn on the motor, tried stretching the retaining springs that held the brushes, put it all back and it worked fine for another 6 months, packed up again after that so I bit the bullit and bought a brand new fan off eBay for £100, Audi wanted £240! For the same fan,job done, I'm no tech wizard but it seemed it was a sealed unit meaning the brushes couldn't be replaced, maybe someone could correct me on this, good luck! Jeff

Thanks for your replies, this place is amazing for a new A2 owner.. :)

Murdo, when you say its probably sensor related, are you talking about the temp sensor or other sensors.? Because it will hold the set temp fine and I've checked by raising and lowering the temp settings, and I can feel the temp changes immediately. So I don't think the temp sensor is faulty..

Jeffers66, is this the fan unit you replaced: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Innenraum...11?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_77&hash=item2c8228ba33

How do I get to the fan unit, and how hard is it to replace.? I am a reasonably competent home mechanic, but it always helps a lot with some hinters and good advice before diving in..

Anyway, I am booked in to have the car checked for fault codes tomorrow, so maybe that will throw some light on this issue.. The guy doing it doesn't have climate control in his car however, so he is unsure if its possible to run a test with VCDS on the different functions in the climate control system, as in turning up temp, turning fan speed up or down, defrost etc through the computer.. Does anyone knows if this is possible.?

Thanks - Alex.

Hi Alex,
Sorry for the delay in replying, unfortunately I can't find the details on the fan I bought, I know it was on eBay but can't see it listed any more, from memory there were a few different part numbers so be best to check with your local Audi dealer with your chassis number, I know it was around £100!
Removal isn't too bad just really fiddly and you need a lot of patience, the glovebox has to be removed for starters, I did it all with passenger seat in which is ok but if you feel confident in removing seat it'll be much easier access laying down to see the bolts, the forum has a glovebox removal thread on here somewhere, but not sure about the fan,
Just for the record I did consider a used fan replacement but thought I could just be buying a duff unit again as they are all around 10 years old now at least!
Cheers jeff

I had the VCDS fault code readout done yesterday, and there were several faults on the climate control system. Read out text was in Danish, so I'll just list the code numbers and my own translation, and hopefully someone has an idea what it means and what is the culprit..

Fault codes are:

- 00710 - motor for defrosting flap (V107)
- 01271 - motor for temp flap (V68)
- 00716 - motor for recirculation flap (V113)
- 00727 - Potientometer in motor for defrost flap (G135)
- 00601 - Potentiometer, adjustmentmotor for central flap (G112)
- 00600 - Potentiometer, adjustmentmotor for temp flap (G92)
- 01273 - Fresh air blower (V2)

The guy doing the VCDS didnt have much idea as he is no electronics expert, but with so many faults he suggested that it might be some kind of power supply issue, since all the other functions in the climate control system works fine, its just the fan that goes nuts and likes to be either off or (most often) on full blow..

Any help will be much appreciated..

Best regards - Alex.
