i'm not sure if this will help the current problem as i have recently replaced the rear nox sensor & removed code for this error myself with a genuine part and eml has stayed off for nearly a few months & also the lambda sensor.
currently running on 61,000 miles on a 2003 model. i have looked around for this problem and looks like checking the exhaust system for leaks is a must. i have removed this code several times now.
other advice ive seen to replace both front & rear cats.
I have seen a statement 'You may be covered under 8 years or 80,000 miles (EPA’s Federal Emissions Law of 1995). another statement 'other thing is if you replace the cat you may also have to have the ECM flashed so that the new cat reads within tolerance which is also 400.00 quid' im not sure if they mean when its a non approved cat replacement or when using an approved one?
tryed booting the car upto 120mph a few times and tryed the 3rd gear in high revs to heat up the cat and remove and dirt but this seems to not have had any affect. the other thing is i have read if the cats efficiency falls below 95% then this code will appear
i have had it in for an emmisions check it passed fine:
fast idle test: pass, natural idle test: pass, overall result exhaust emission test: pass.
& fitter said you couldnt get much better readings, i said should i let the problem develop and he said yes but it just annoys me i would like it to dissappear
readiness test shown buy autel vag 405.
catalyst - fail
heate cat - pass
evap sys - fail
sec.air.sys - pass
a/c - pass
02 sensor - fail
heated 02 - pass
egr sys - pass
ive replaced the rear nox sensor - genuine part, new egr pipe - genuine part (which goes under the high pressure fuel pump) . also just replaced the front lambda sensor with bosch 7355 on the 30/06/12 & have now noticed heated 02 and egr have changed from fails to passes. im going to wait to see if the below code appears again
only seem to have the code p0420 appearing now & is catalyst efficency below threshold bank 1
this code appears after 1-4 weeks, think im going to replace the 2nd catalyst with either klarius 311984 or (8z0253024x genuine part) the pipe in between cat/back box klarius au435w (8z0253409 genuine part) and back box/silencer klarius au436v (8z0253609p genuine part)
& change these at a later point front cat (genuine part 1j0131690fx) klarius 322193
front pipe joing second cat (genuine part 8z02254300b) karius 301937
front cat temperature sensor part number 036906088c
