Correct Starter Motor for TDI90 ATL ??

Morning folks. I've been having some starting issues with my 2004 TDI90 and I had put a call out for a used starter in the 'wanted' as I wasn't 100% it was the starter itself. This morning however it was really struggling and I can see quite a lot of smoke from the body of the starter. It's always felt really laboured to start so I think I need to just get a new one.

I need it quickly so GSF or ECP are probably my best bet, but there's a couple of options from both Lucas and Bosch as well as cheaper makes. Using Autodoc just to see if I can get part numbers on the Lucas and Bosch for example it looks like there is 1,8kw 1,9kw, 2kw variations listed for the car and very different pricing.

Can anyone help point me in the direction of the correct starter? – anyone recently bought a starter motoe for their TDI90?

Thanks,

Kennedy.

Daft but obvious question.

Have you checked the starter earth cable / earthing point? That would also cause laboured starting and could smoke by the starter if there was damage under the insulation as well.

To add, I believe any facelifted TDi will have the same starter, so definitely good used options from @Clackers @A2Steve or @Ami i would have thought.

Ahh, okay thanks for highlighting. We've got a 2005 BHC TDI here and I picked up what I thought was a correct to engine code starter for that car from member @Swalsey aka Antony… so I'll offer that up and like you say, might be a direct fit.

Anyone second that who is familiar with TDI starters… certainly would help me out if I can fix it with something already in the garage! (I can't currently look because car is stranded roadside somewhere else)

Hi Robin, the cable had been removed and refitted but I wouldn't say it made any difference… possibly the connection points or cable itself could be still be faulty.

I have 2 starters on my shelf from ATL engines. They are surplus due to fitting of 6 speed MYP gearboxes with associated MYP starters. Happy to sell one on if you want to collect. Just north of Gloucester. £30.

All sorted, whacked on the starter motor that I had actually bought for the other BHC TDI, as @dj_efk said, fitted onto my ATL with no problems.

Really glad my assumption was on the money and you happened to have the correct part all along!

My logic was based on the ATL and BHC both sharing the same basic block, the differences I believe are based on ancillaries such as injectors, the flywheel and turbo (of course) etc. - and possible a few internal parts affecting compression.
