Darn Goverment on car tax.....

Been very confused by the Tax bracket on the A2, as I thought it would be £35 a year, but from reading on the net this does not seem to be the case? It's £115.
My mother-in-law owns a Skoda Fabia 1.4 2002 model and she has just had to pay £165? How can all this be justified.

So for me:
1.4 manufactured January 2001 and pay: £115 a year.
Mother-in-law:
1.4 manufactured end of March 2002 and pay: £165 a year.

It seems the goverment really have confused matters on this new car tax structure.

What are your thoughts??

Jimsa2,

It's all pretty simple really:

pre March 2001, all the old stuff applies, so it basically goes on engine size, the cut-off being 1549cc.

Post March 2001, everything is emission rated, into bands ranging from A to F, with a new band G being introduced at the last budget.

The lower your emissions, the lower you tax - simple really. The difference between the 2 cars you mention comes because of the March 2001 cut-off and the difference in emmisions (the Fabia will be more polluting).

It'll all settle down once the pre-2001 car market goes away and to be honest, I think it's fairer: the more you pollute, the more you pay. There would always be an introduction point, and some people would always lose out if their car was on the wrong side of the line!

My other half is a prime example: she has a 996cc Toyota Yaris, petrol, registered in September 2000 and so pays £115 per year, although she probably has emissions similar to my £35 per year 1422cc diesel.

Cheers,

Mike

It goes like this...from 22nd March 2007 - Direct.gov.uk

If your car is registered before the 1st March 2001 the Road Tax is based on engine size. i.e.

Not over 1549cc £115
over 1549cc £180

If your car is registered on or after the 1st March 2001 the Road Tax is based on CO2 and fuel type. i.e.

***NOTE Figures for both Petrol and Diesel are now the same***

Band A up to 100 £0
Band B 101 to 120 £35
Band C 121 to 150 £115
Band D 151 to 165 £140
Band E 166 to 185 £165
Band F over 185 £205

If your car is registered on or after the 23rd March 2006 the Road Tax is based on CO2 and fuel type. i.e.

As above with the addition of: -
Band G over 225 £300

Therefore: -

Your 1.4 registered Jan 01 is based on engine size
Your Mother-in-Law's 1.4 is based on CO2 and for that price it is in Band E

As an example...

A2 TDI Regestered 28th Feb 01 is based on engine size £115
A2 TDI Regestered 1st Mar 01 is based on CO2 £35

So 1 day makes £80 difference.

There just had to be a cut off date.
