Hello,
Small question.
I noticed that some of the A2 have a small red display between the speedo and the rev-counter...and some have a bigger one.

Do all A2 show the digital MPG its doing?

no, you need the DIS for that, i.e. the bigger display.

Is it possible to retrofit the DIS by replacing the front drivers console and the switch unit on the wiper stalk?

It's not as simple as that David - there's a lot more involvement and it'll cost in excess of £1000.

If you want it, get a car with it on.

Or alternatively if you buy one without; for a 10th of a full DIS retrofit, buy a ScanGauge II...

The scanguage 2 looks like an effective compromise (and more) to the lack of MPG data, I was wondering if this unit would fit on the end of the mini-sunvisor as the rear view mirror is always a place I look every 10-15 seconds or so therefore a glance at the scanguage could become part of your mirror scan.

Can't see a reason why not, although you'd have to extend (and therefore cut into and void the warranty on the lead) the cables to reach up there.

I am pretty sure I read somewhere when getting a sccangauge you can buy a extention cable to do as exatly what you are planing to do.
