Definitive HID upgrade

.. and, no doubt, the '"ultimate" ones cost a shed load more?

Having suffered the ultimate crappo light output possible from:

1) a 1960 6v VW Beetle;
2) a 1993 Citroen XM.

By comparison the A2's headlights, even in standard format, are excellent!

yes, ultimates are more.
I've just had a really good customer service follow-up from Autobulbs though, suggesting some additional checks to see if one or other or both ballasts are causing it and positing that a replacement is an option if I can rule anything else out at this stage, so I'm happy with that so far. Just need to spend some time working through it.
Anyone know where I can get some "aluminium insulating tape"?

You can get aluminium adhesive tape from builders merchants - it is used extensively for bonding the aluminium clad insulation boards together.

Fingers crossed, but I think that it will be a fruitless excercise - after all, how close does the aerial wire get to the ballasts!?

Cheers,

Mike

i have a cheap set of hids off ebay (£60) had them over a year now still work excellent and i have never had any interferance through the radio.

Still having the radio interferrence also. I'll also try isolating the ballasts to see if one of them is causing the problem.

You contacted them as well I seem to remember? Might be best if we both go back to Autobulbs together if the foil trick doesn't work?

It maybe where you have fitted them, Mike fitted mine at ADI and i've had no trouble with the radio. Mine are the hids4u 5000k anti glare kit

Cheers Phil

I'm planning to install a low beam HID conversion-kit to my car. I'm advised by a distributor to install a H7R Canbus kit instead of a normal H7-kit to reduce glare from the A2 reflector headlights and to reduce possible interference with the Canbus system. It also has an EMC filter to reduce the risk of radio interference. The price is about EUR150 or GPB130 for this kit. What's your thoughts about H7R vs standard H7 kits for the A2? I've not read anything about H7R-kits yet on A2OC, so that's why I'm asking.
I'm also concerned about the risk of radio interference, and this kit is supposed to reduce the risk of such interference, and therfore I'm willing to spend a little more money than on the cheapest kits out there.

Hi Xiter
At least one club member has fitted a H7R kit as the anti glare bulbs only cost £10 extra.
Not sure about paying more for a 'can bus' kit as the attached web site suggests they are only required for specific cars and they dont include the A2

Although they are a UK supplier it still makes interesting reading

I fitted a set of H7R tubes for Grim Reaper and also Pamanal21 - both are very happy with the results.

As Spike says, a specific kit that includes CAN compatibility is not needed, as the A2s bulb check function isn't affected.

PM either of the above two members for their reflections on their new lights for more info.

Cheers,

Mike

By way of an update on my RF interference
1. I've now installed an additional RF choke on the aerial feed into the headunit - no change.
2. I've also wrapped the low and high voltage cables from each ballast in aluminium tape (with an outer coating of insulating tape as I was worried about putting exposed conductive material on the outside of these cables) as recommended by Autobulbs - no change.

The final thing to try before I get these swapped for some different ballasts is to wrap the ballasts themselves in aluminium tape I guess (as they suggested).

Hid 'kit' dipped beams.

Hi Xiter/Dan b,
, I purchased from the 'car-mod-shop' the Set as follows;
XENON HID CONVERSION KIT @£69.99+ postage etc, this has HR7 bulbs (6000K) which give a fantastic white light/ outer tinged blue, As stated, Skipton fitted these for me and i have no radio interference whatsoever!! i can't praise this kit higher!! absolutely brill easy 30/40 % more light and clearer definition into the BARGAIN, so to anyone out there thinking of having better lighting on their A2, go ahead,a really good & sensible addiction,
Cheers ALAN.

I didn't think it would work. I'd be surprised if wrapping the ballasts will make any difference either.

When I get some time I will disconnect the ballasts individually to see if I can identify one that's causing the problem. Hopefully I can then get it swapped.

Hi Dan
Its not clear from your mail if you have already done this but the aluminium foil will have little shielding effect unless you add earthing straps, ideally to a common earthing point.
As you probably know, the foil needs to be a good conductor so the propper aluminium stuff may be better than the metallised plastic variety. (not sure what you'r using)

Cheers Spike
