Diesel Filter: Can it be replaced by later model?

Just wondering if the diesel filter in my 1.4 TDI 2001 MODEL can be changed for a later model. Currently, I have to replace the whole unit...which is a real pain.

Any Advise appreciated

I don't think anyone in the UK has tried to update the filter assy but as a starting point you could check the two filter arrangements using vagcat - http://www.vagcat.com/epc/

It is do-able, but costs rule it out.

You'll need new rubber lines, a new housing and mounts, which will come to around £200.

Factor in the fact that the older style metal filter cannister is actually cheaper than the paper element from the newer type and it's a no brainer!!
