diesel "power box" - recommendations please

Hello

Having previously owned heavily modded TDI passat, I am aware of benefits of custom made remap.

However, I am more keen to engage a simple 'plug-and-play' type of TDI power box solution for my 1.4 TDI A2, mainly due to lower cost element. My primary objective is lower fuel consumption. That's what custom remap would do. I expect a properly engineered power box to do the same.

I would like to receive recommendations on well engineered power box brands.

Thank you.

Hi Artsi

Merry Christmas to you from Scotland, I would recommend the following as I have fitted them to Two different A2 tdi 75bhp cars, very happy with the product and you will not break the Bank of England sorry Finland when purchasing one at under 20 Euros.

I have just returned from London after 8 days and 900 plus miles and my car averaged over 65 mpg at motorway speeds, If you are a purest A2er the must have is a remap ??? not quite the same for not a lot more gain ???. Ho ho Oh!

Hi
be careful with these.

Many of them plug into the temperature sender circuit and trick the ECU into thinking that the engine is cold and so it "overfuels" the engine. That is the equivalent of using the wrong air / fuel mixture.
So if there is no explanation of what is in the box it MIGHT be just a resistor.

If these kits are more complex and have some proven circuitry in them then maybe they are ok.

But remaps can vary a lot in price and if you have decided not to go for the individual remap that uses a rolling road to set it up, the ones that use a standard map are cheaoer and are likely to give better results than a "box of tricks"

you do get what you pay for in this kind of thing. So please be careful. A £50 gadget that doesn't work is more expensive than a £100 remap that does work.

Volkswagen boffins seem quite good at this sort of thing Steve. They have sent me a couple of nice letters relating to my wifes car which is due for the recall at some point next year. :)

It would appear that the 16Tdi,s need a little more work than the 2.0Tdi,s. I have a sneaky suspiscion that power may decrease and fuel consumption will go up - boo ! :(
I share your suspicion Dave. My dad and father in law have had the letters for 1.6TDI Skoda Roomster and Fabia respectively. Unless the recall is mandatory ( which I doubt) I've recommended they ignore the recall.

As they both live on Scottish Islands I doubt much of a fuss will be made

I've asked VW to cover the costs of an independent dyno run so I can verify power figures before and after. I've stated given their honesty policy that it will be nominated by me!!!!

From what I've read, in addition to the software change, the 1.6 engine only needs an airflow 'smoothing' tube installed before the MAF sensor to prevent turbulent air screwing up the flow measurements - http://www.myvidster.com/video/53248120/Dieselgate_how_to_fix_Volkswagen_16_TDI_engine.
