EGR-P0106 I still have an issue

Hi All, long time no chat. Post Covid lockdown 2020 and Pre Brexit I decided to move to France, so now I live in France and work in the UK, travelling each weekend. Anyway, the A2 BBY ( 1.4 with 130k ) has been running well but I have had the Engine light on for a bit. Having had a similar issue with the A2 BAD, I made a blanking plate and blocked the EGR. This does throw up the EML ( P0106 is the usual code) and sometimes the EPC but the car runs smoothly. I decided to spend some time on it and see if I can fix the lot. So I bought a brand new EGR and fitted it, removed the blanking plate and took it for a test drive. Back to square 1! When just cruising at any speed the car starts to jerk. Accelerating, even very mild acceleration is fine as long as there is a bit of load on the engine its fine. I have no additional exhaust smoke, no other issues just this wretched jerking. I wanted to put in a new mini filter( 037 133 843A) but cant find anything on Flebay of Eurocarthieves. ( Things done recently, Full service, MAF cleaned, throttle body off and cleaned spotless, new coil on 3 as I was getting a random misfire ). Any ideas gratefully received.
Thanks, Russ

Hi Fyrstyk, where and what is the EGR control solenoid. I thought it was a single unit, solenoid opening and closing a valve. I have checked all the vacuum lines I can see, just manually though, no smoke check. The thing that throws me is that the blanking plate on the throttle body end of the metal EGR pipe cures the problem, but then the EML light is always on. So I thought it was definitely EGR related, but happy to look elsewhere.

What quality egr valve have you fitted? I have never known a cheap egr valve to be anygood at all

Just had a thought, is it diesel or petrol?

Ok, quality may be an issue. I went with the cheapest one I could find. £40.00. I had a very close look and it didnt look cheap at all, fitment was exact and apart from the wire connector, no plastic bits, in reality it looks identical to the one I took off, just not rusted to hell. Metal gaskets as well. Now, you could be right. Is there a way I can test the EGR off the car. Ie can I measure resistance across pins or something. Can I activate the solenoid somehow to see if the valve is opening?

You could check the resistance in wiring and pins in wiring plug any resistance higher than 0.5 ohm then its bad news!
You could activate the valve using live data and also look at the MAF values as the air demands should fall as EGR opens air is drawn thru the egr it drops the volume going thru the MAF. The egr only opens a small distance thou!
Tbh sadly a cheap egr valve is an expensive door stop really wish it wasnt this way but the only "cheap" option is to go with a good used one and take your chances!

I have had similar trouble with EGR on my AUA 1.4 . I have changed two different EGR valve and always problem. Them I have bought a new genuine one from Audi and all problem disappered.

Thank you gents. I am going to take the car for a long run this afternoon and see if that helps at all. I will see if I can service/rebuild the old one just enough to see if it does anything different from the new one. I can see a cheap part not lasting long but would have hoped that it would work for a period. As it seems to have made no difference at all, I could be looking at a different problem? Anyway, I just have to keep at it as its a good car and quite simple to maintain.

Most of workshop have an ultrasound water cleaner that is a good help for dirthy EGR. They normally put it into the cleaner for one day. Water becomes completely black and EGR is much cleaner than before.
