Emission warning light on with 1.4tdi (90)

Hello Chaps

Long time no here!

A little while ago, after a long stop start journey into London, the emission warning light came on (the yellow one shaped like an engine). After a short drive home I checked the manual and found there is a test switch for the warning lights. I did the test which cycled through all the dash lights. After switching the ignition off and on the emission light went off. Hey presto I thought I'd solved it!

Next morning everything is fine so I start my drive into London. After half a mile the light came on again. I wasn't prepared to risk it so I phone my Audi specialist (CT Cars, West Horsely) and ask him if it was OK to drive. He said the only way to tell was to plug the computer in. So I drove straight over for him to do that.

By the time I got there the light had gone out but he said no problem as the fault codes would be retained.

The faults were 3 failed glow-plugs and a failed water temperature sensor. As I had only 1000 miles to go for a service he said it would be OK to drive the car until then. He also said for all the glow-plugs to fail was unusual and it could be something upstream causing the problem. I have been using the car since then and the light is on about 50% of the time. It is continuos it doesn't flash.

I'd like some opinions on the problems and some indication of whether these parts are replaceable by a home mechanic. I'm pretty good with spanners and have done most things in my time that can be done at home with standard tools.

Your feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Robbie
