Engine problem diagnostics 1,4 AUA

Hi,
I have a A2 2001 with 1, 4 gas engine AUA that not have working for the 3 last weeks.

The problem started with a stop like lost fire in a roundabout, tow truck was required.

• I have correct fuel pressure and volume flow
• Exhaust pipe with cats are changed
• Injectors are new
• Sparking plugs are new
• Cam position sensor is changed
• Rev sensor is changed
• Compression is OK
• Air inlet incl. shutter housing is checked and cleaned
• Nice spark on all plugs
• Fuel comes to the cylinders
• Battery with13,5 volt

Before I changed the rev sensor I had 2 fault codes the sensor and the EGR valve. At this time I had some misfire both on low and high revs.

After changing the sensor I have not been able to diagnose the fault codes but no engine fault code light in the combo instrument shows.

I got it to start and could rev with no problem but less than 2300 RPM the engine was “rolling” in rev heavily and no idle. When diving I had major problem with jerking accelerator and need to slip on clutch until I reach 2500 RPM on each gear, over that the engine was very nice no misfire at all.

After stopping it I couldn’t restart it, likely to that the starter didn’t have high revs. enough. I have tried with “engine starter spray” direct in the manifold but no fire what so ever.

Does anyone here have an idea about what it can be? The items that I still haven’t changed are the pressure sensor in the manifold and engine management units.

Anyone have info how the engine is controlled on low revs? It’s a Magneti Marelli system.

I’m an old auto technician and working in the auto industry but the last 20 years I haven’t been working so much hands-on with the cars and mainly other brands. I have the electronic workshop manuals and parts books and are able to read them but at this time missing a diagnose tool.

I have read all info in the forum about engine problem but haven’t found the same problem as I have.

Check all of your electrical connections to the secret compartment under the floor; re-check the earths to both A pillars and the main one in the engine compartment.

Replace your spark plugs ONLY with the audi-approved ones (yes, it really is that picky). Did you check that all the HT leads sit properly?

There are two programs in the system, one for under 1200rpm and another one for over that (the changeover is not consistent).

Thanks for your fast reply :)
Plugs are NGK BKUR 6ET 10, all parts fitted are AUDI Genuine parts. The HT leads are OK in place. I have gone throu all connectors by checking the pins and cleaned them with Audi approved electronic spray.
Please indicate earths connections at A-pillar (inside the car?).
I have't check the engine earth !!!!
The misfire or jerking was up to approx 2200-2300 RPM.

I still have problems with this car, but have now got a VCDS tool.

If I understand I need to start search the problem with in the ABS system??

Not many weeks before the problems started I had one ABS sensor changed along with pad/linings disc/drums and wheelcylinders rear along with fluid by a Audi dealer workshop.

A few weeks later I the engine started to run on 3 cyl. and the diagnose was a faulty injector (no3) the same workshop changed all 4 injectors (which was a few $$ ££).

Now I try to find out if I have two fault that generate the engine problem:
1 ABS problem that gives different wheel speed and which generate a engine control fault?
2 A wiring problem to injector no3 that makes a missfire?

Yes I have check all codes at that page also made a search with Google to a number of forums that talk about the same faultcodes mainly the:

Did you check the lambda sensors? there may be a cable fault to the injector and the other things may be caused by something other than the EGR....
