Exhaust Gas Recirculation Valve

Hi RTV,

I never heard the moo sound for over 1 year. Strangely enough it appeared the first time just before meeting up at the first A2 social. My wife and I thought it was coming from someones elses car as it sounded like a subwoofer turned up loud (suprise suprise), however I quickly realised my foot was doing all the beats. Strangely, it only happens now and again in our A2, usuually after a long drive (over 1 hour).
Also, the moo isn't actually that bad I dont think. I wouldn't let that stop me from buying another.

Okay, this thread has left me wondering.

I would think that my 2003 TDi would not suffer from this problem, but since I do think that I hear some abnormal side-effects under certain circumstances, I'd like to know more about this.

Could anyone confirm that my description below does NOT match the 'moo'?

Description:
"What I hear is a sound that is (IMHO) best described as a small airplane chasing the A2, thus more like a vibration. I hear it whenever engine RPM is between 2600 and 3000. It is most pronounced when coming from higher RPMs and while letting go of the throttle to slow down. But it can also be heard when just cruising at those rpms, in virtually any gear."

Not really a moo. The 3-cylinder roar above 3000 rpm is more moo-ish than this, but now I'm just curious. Will follow up with my dealer too, of course.

Thanks, Edo

Thats not the moo. The moo happens when you just start to depress the accelerator - it goes away within a second or so. When it starts to happen you can pretty much control it, i.e. make it happen when you want.

The A2 went in today today to sort out the 'moo' and cutting out of the Turbo.
The problem was traced to a loose joint on a hose or pipeline somewhere!!! - Sorry I can't be more specific, I should have paid more attention! [:I]

Anyway, the turbo problem is fixed. When I picked the car up, I was told that the moo was still there but only occaisionally. They're right - I think I can probably live with it if it doesn't get worse.

At least I had the day to compare my 1.4TDi with the courtesy 1.6FSi - I now know I chose the right engine! [24]

Tikki,

I notice from you sig that ur A2 has been 'chipped'. Did you make the dealer aware of this when you took you car in or did they notice/mention anything to you in their search to cure your car's problem? The 33BHP hike in power surely would have been noticeable to them if they drove it or something would have shown up if they had run diagnostics to find your engines ailments?

I'd only had the car chipped a couple of weeks when the turbo started cutting out. We thought it might be a problem with the chip so the installers removed it. This didn't cure the problem so we took it into the dealers to find the cause.
The chip hasn't been replaced yet so it was standard when they worked on it. To be perfectly honest, even though it is a large increase in BHP, it isn't really noticeable except for mid range acceleration and less frequent down-changes for inclines.

I do wonder whether it would have shown up on diagnostics - the superchip installer says it wont!

My A2 TDI has been in the dealer's for two days for them to try and fix this and they've come back with nothing, good to find some info here so I can phone them back tomorrow and tell them what they need to change!!

They did manage to damage the car while it was in there (large scrape on the rear arch), they've said they'll repair it FOC but do I just accept that or ask for something else?

Cheers

Welcome.

Sorry to hear of your problems. The mooing sound should be fixed-Audi dealers have managed it so far.

As for the damage, the repair goes without saying, but it may be worth getting written confirmation from them as to how it happened. If you sell the car elsewhere in the futre and some picks up on the repair they may think it was a more damage than a scrape so the letter should go some way to proving it was just a minor repair. And maybe a set of floor mats or something!!!

My car does the 'mooing', but I'm waiting until service to have it done. I've printed off these pages and will be showing them to the dealer so they know what to do. As for the damaged car I'd be looking for at least one free service.

Since I had the new 'modified' version of the EGR valve fitted to my A2, I have driven about 1,500 miles and the cow has not returned. It was definitely the solution to the problem. I'll try and find out the part number and post it here.

In my experience the 'mooing' only occurs if I've been sat in traffic for some time, especially during the hot summer and then I set off. As the clutch comes up there is a 'moo' or as I explained it to the dealer, over 18 months ago, a 'gulp' 'gulp'. Not had mine rectified, just got used to it I don't even notice it now.

My TDi went "moo" too but my helpful dealer cured it with a new EGR valve.

In my car you could hear the noise more from the right hand front seat, but not from the left-hand side. I think Dennis is right: it's a problem with RHD cars because that's where the owner sits.
