Faulty temperature gauge?

A2 Louis

Hi all I’ve noticed in my A2 recently the temperature guage sometimes moves to the centre as should when car gets warm but now it sometimes moves and sometimes doesn’t move

Cheers

Hi Louis,

They all do that at some point unfortunetaly!

Check your water level immediately. If it's down then find out whats causing it straight away as you don't want the dreaded "Pipe of Death" problem.

Check your temp sender sensor and put the correct one in it's place. (BTW, I went through three of them before I got one to work correctly and I'm still not too sure about it).

So you know.... I had no water in the car after said 'Pipe of Death failure' and it still read the correct temperature on the gauge.

There are plenty of threads on here including my own contributions a couple of years ago regarding water problems with the A2, take this fault very seriously if you want to avoid a very high bill.

Cheers

Hi the guage Does not move at all it’s like there is no power going to it so may be faulty but the car warms up and it’s all ok

it won't be the gauge, it will be the temperature sender. G2/G62 dual unit. Don't skimp on the replacement, get OEM. You'll also need a litre of G12++.

Maybe we should resurrect Alan Turing to help with the enigma of the Temperature gauge :)

Any one flushed their cabin heater or coolant system to see if it helps the car heat up quicker or helps stabilize the temp gauge?

Btw, I've had x3 electronic thermostats fitted to my car since I got it 3 years ago, it's a bloody awful thing..

Its not a code of the silt in the system, just that the TDI does produce very much waist heat, the cabin heater gets the hot water from the engine first, even before the thermostat, so the small amount of heat being generated by the engine is feed into the cabin heater which dully extracts the heat and returns cool/cold water to the engine.
This will continue with the engine running cool / cold until either the cabin warm up and therefore pulls less heat from the engine (allowing it warm up and ultimately open the stat) or the engine revs increase, thus creating more surplus heat
This is where on the early cars the Webasto Aux heater helps greatly, as on full power it adds 5.5 Kw of heat into the system, or half this on half power. The Webasto kicks in automatically at less than 7.5 Deg C unless the heater control is set to ECON in which case the Webasto is disabled

On my own A2 at 8 deg C outside temp. on my 8 miles commute on B roads to work and the cabin heater on full the temp gauge will not move past 70 deg C when I have got to work, in the warmer weather at say 14 Deg C I hit 90 Deg C at about 5 miles all be it with the heater no medium
Now if the outside temp is < 7 deg C I hit 90Deg C in 3 miles, and 80 in about 1.5 miles, the cabin is toasty warm in 3 or 4 mins - that is what 5.5Kw of additional heating does for you :)

Cheers,

Just to corroborate what Paul is saying but without the Webasto - with my 04 Tdi 75 on almost exactly the same commute distance / time, I get warm air from the electric heater in a couple of minutes after starting up if the heating is set on HI, but on cold days the gauge (now fully functional since replacing the thermostat last Easter and the temp sender in the summer) only gets to around 70 just as I arrive at work (7 miles), or 90 by about 80% distance on a warm day.

Interesting. I've got a 2001 Tdi and didn't know about the webasto until asking this forum why there was smoke coming from the front of the car :)
It's a great design to ensure cabin heat and engine temperature even on cold days. I imagine it is more useful in Europe with more extremes of temperature then the UK.
