First MOT

My A2 is fast approaching it's 3rd Birthday [24].

Despite being able to express contentment at having a non-faulty A2 for this whole period, the 3 year mark can only mean one thing...it's first MOT is due :(.

Has anyone had any experience of this yet? If so what can I expect....what sort of things were wrong with your A2 after 3 years and how much did it cost to rectify?

Am I best advised to get the MOT done at an Audi dealer or should I just go to Joe Bloggs under the railway arches and get it done there?

Can you have your MOT done a few day before the 3 year warranty expires? If so, get the Audi dealer to do the MOT and any warranty items that may be indentified are covered.

Good idea Steve, I think you can have it done up to one month before.

Although I am far from the dreaded MOT, I am beginning to think about it. I would go careful with Joe Bloggs under the arches. Two things come to mind: first what is Joe going to do with the bonnet when he finally gets it off (drop it on the floor?); second how is Joe going to lift the car and raise each wheel? Does Joe know or care where the lifting points are - a trolley jack or a careless lift could do massive damage to the aluminium underbody or suspension components. While I am on, and for the future, when I got my A2 Tdi I was not pleased to find that Audi are still up to their old trick of fitting a one-piece exhaust. Will that small hole in the back box result in everything having to be replaced, including the catalyst?
All the best, Paul

Few things re Paul's Thread- it's while since I had an MOT on a car but IIRC there are no MOT items under the bonnet, so no need to open or remove it. I always stay with my car during MOTs to ensure it is lifted correctly. Most cars I've owned have had a one piece fitted from new which is subsequently replaced for a two piece system.

Stuart D - I'm sure your car is well loved so I wouldn't expect a major failure at the first MOT, if one at all. Headlamp alignment, blown bulb, bald tyre, cracked number plate, worn wiper balde are favourites for failure, but cheap to fix.

Dave: MOT is very much bonnet up in recent years, for example to look at brake master cylinder/fluid/pipes, is the battery secured (OK in the boot with the A2) and so on. Replacing the one-piece exhaust with two pieces is replacing the lot; subsequently one part can be fitted I agree. Paul

It would appear that testing centres have even been advised on how to deal with the A2 and it's "non-existent" bonnet: as evidenced by the Vehicle Inspectorate's October 2001 newsletter here.

Edited repeatedly because Mark forgot how to do forum code properly :(

Indeed... I, for one, will be taking snaps of my bonnet and surrounds before it goes in for testing. Probably not a bad idea to do the same for a normal service - I've found that the plastic panels (wings in particular) scratch very easily: hopefully they're not a corrosion risk...

Had my MOT done at the VSI service time (31,800 miles)- two months short of the three year point. No problems at all - would have resorted to warranty if there was!

My dealer gives me a free MOT for the life of ownership - I thought all Audi centres did this? Each year I'll tie in with another service requirement - brake fluid etc as the next service point on the VSI indicates 63,000. Planning on keeping the car in the family for a few more years.
