first time Audi A2 mods...

Alright A2OC,

Can anyone recommend any typical first things first mods, i.e Remap, Suspension, lowered springs etc before going on to bigger things.

I will most likely sort out exterior styling but what are the biggest alloys I can fit, 17''?

Would be good for any feedback.

Cheers.

If you have a tdi the first thing i would do is remap it, it is relatively cheap and the performance gains are very usefull, if you want better suspension koni fsd's offer the best of both worlds comfort and sport, you can fit cruise control, 17 " rs4 wheels basically there are nearly endless possibilities (just look at Skipton01 for inspiration) and i have done most of the above and it has made the car much more enjoyable!

Chris

"bigger things"? Now my interest is piqued.

If it's a petrol - look at €2000+ for more power. If it's a TDI, remap.

Other than that? Don't put the biggest wheels you can find on because you'll destroy what little suspension comfort you have left and will become magically attracted to curbstones. You'll also slow the car down.

there's also minimal exterior parts available. A few Votex bits on Ebay and that's it. No snowploughs here.

Well, where do you start?!

Got a TDi? Get a remap (about £250 and a massive improvement in driveability)!
No cruise? Get cruise (about £150 and makes for a nice relaxed drive)!
Rear cup holders? (about £60)
Bigger alloys? Get 17" B7 RS4 reps (about £400 off ebay and looks great)!
Better ride? Get Koni FSD shocks, Weitec front springs (about £750 but worth every penny, transforms the car's handling and ride)
Better handling? Get a Whiteline Rear Antiroll bar (about £180)
Want to see in the dark? Get HIDs (about £100)
Want better economy? Get the under-body aero parts (about £50)
Want even better economy? Get the longer 5th gear mod (if you've got a TDi) (£200 for parts)...

The list, as they say, goes on...

Thanks alot you three!

So realistically getting a diesel would be the most cost efficient option. I didn't realize it would be £2000 plus for the petrol mods!! ... what would they include out of curiosity?

In conclusion then if I was to get a 1.4 TDi have it remapped and get the springs recommended I should be off to a good start. (Are these also OK with 15'' & 16'' then?) I have a budget to work with but which would u say go for first?

I'm in Sheffield so are there any good garages near & around I could go to to get these things sorted?

Cheers,
Alec.

If you're in Sheffield, don't get 17" wheels that would be my recommendation, having driven on some of your roads!
You'll actually see on the forum that quite a few people on 17s have actually downsized to 16s for comfort reasons (not me I hasten to add).
Mike (Skipton01) isn't all that far from you - he's got more A2 knowlege than most and many on the forum use him for servicing and mods (Mike did my cruise control for example).

Cheers Dan,

Yeah tell me about it... Shocking!

I think I'll stick to the 16''s then if its going to be more comfortable.

I'll get in contact then when needed, not got the car yet! haha

Alec.

I was up in Sheffield a few weeks ago, saw a fair few A2s around the place. There seem to be quite a few good spec A2s going for sale on Ebay and Autotrader at the moment, this forum is pretty good at posting up links to good ones. Good luck in your search!

the petrol side of things: there isn't an easy way to remap. Only option is "old-fashioned" tuning, incl. breathing and head mods, cam and such, or a turbo or supercharger, both of which are complex because of the drive-by-wire throttle. And neither are cheap.

Cheers Dan,

Finding one for the budget that's the problem... but thanks.

Bretti_Kivi,

Nice one, think I'll stick to the diesel then, sounds very expensive & time consuming.

Cheers.

Hi Alec, Steadler, on the wicker. They are Porsche, VW & Specialists. Steve Head mechanic and owner, is very knowledgeable, and they are reasonably priced and do a proper job.

If you can go a bit further, Skipton, just over the snake, Is probably the main A2 Guru and specialist.

Cheers Black Pearl,

Didn't realise there was someone that close, about 5 mins from my work! So they would fit everything I'm after? i.e the Koni FSD shocks & anti-roll bar.

What about the remap? Where can I go for that?

I will definitely have a look into them, in regard to Skipton, I've been told that hes the man will contact him also when the times right.

Thanks.

Alec.

There are a couple of people on here running the Whiteline RARB in combination with the Koni FSD setup and they all report on reduced understeer and less body roll which is noticeable on normal road driving, so I'd say that's a yes. The Whiteline is adjustable too so you can dial in your preferred level of understeer reduction. I fitted an uprated Whiteline to my old S2 quattro and it made a massive difference to that car.

I was toying with the idea of getting one for a while but decided my mod priorities for the time being would be all about improving economy, rather than pace, hence the aero mods and the forthcoming 5th gear replacement (just ordered the parts........)

With the aero parts, do they fit under the body of the car because if so i cant really fit them myself and do they need to be modified or do you buy and fit them?

Chris

There are three aero mods off the shelf which come from the ultra-efficient 1.2TDi (which Audi saw fit never to sell into the UK in Right hand drive, why Audi, why?!).
and all need a little bit of under-the-car action to fit. The first two are dead easy to fit though

1. front wheel arch winglets - these screw into the fixings in the undertray at the front of the wheel arch, so you need to get the undertray off for that. The winglets help reduce the turbulence created by the wheels.

2. exhaust tunnel cover - this screws directly into the fixings underneath the car, covering the exhaust and creating a flat bottom for the car, reducing drag.

3. front sub-frame spoiler - this screws into the alloy subframe underneath the gearbox. This requires drilling of new holes into the subframe, made more complicated by the middle hole being just where the exhaust bends down. This is a PITA. Again this reduces drag by deflecting air away from the untidy bits underneath the car.

Right so it is quite complex then, how do you get around the hole being near the exhaust, surely the heat from the exhaust will melt the plastic piece if they touch? how has adding these pieces affected your economy.

Well, fitting the winglets took about 45mins with the car up on axle stands, and fitting the exhaust cover tunnel took about 10mins, again with the car on axle stands. They were not complicated at all.

I have failed to fit the subframe spoiler yet due to issues with drilling the middle hole but I'll get it done when I get my 5th gear mod done in a few weeks time.

Hard to say exactly what the mpg improvements I've seen of late is due to specifically, given other confounding factors (e.g. ambient temperature has improved, but also I had a faulty thermostat which I replaced), but considering that, since fitting those mods and replacing my stat my economy has improved from a regular average of 43 to 53mpg. I'm sure the aero bits have played their part in that, but also the faulty stat was an issue. Either way I'm pleased to be back in the low-to-mid 50s, and hope to get that nearer to 60 when my 5th gear mod and subframe spoiler gets done in the next few weeks...

Ok, fair enough i might get the exhaust cover and winglets but not the subframe thingy, if the winglets go under the undertray does that mean you have to drill holes in the undertray aswell?

Chris

Winglet holes are all alread there, just plug and play :)
There are several threads about these parts in the forum - includes pictures to aid fitting and part numbers of the parts and their fixings...
