Flashing EML - FSI

Hi all,

Both of my FSIs have been running great. No hesitation, no misfires, excellent consumption, happy days.

I drove one of them back from Heathrow on Sunday and no issues. Then today I jumped in to go to the shops and 3 min into the journey I felt some hesitation. That was swiftly followed by the EML flashing like a Christmas light and with that it started limping along. I pulled over and was sure I got a smell of rotten eggs briefly. I drove back home slowly and when every acceleration the EML would flash again. I plugged it into the VCDS and it says random/multiple misfire (and so not a specific cylinder).

Has anybody experienced this? I have dealt with and resolved FSI misfires before through changing sparks and coil packs and an injector. But I then had the EML on constantly (not flashing) until it was resolved and this has come on very suddenly and the result on how the car drives is quite dramatic which suggests something more significant than a coilpack or spark may have failed.

Is your cat still in situ?

One injector was replaced (but that was on my other FSI).

Mac, earth behind the headlight is on my list but the sudden fault makes me think it won’t be that sadly. Got some new sparks on the way so will change all of those over and will swap over the coil packs from my other FSI to see if that makes a difference. If the issue is still there then may have to be another visit to Gary at B&F.

Anyone, including B&F will need more info, unless you get into changing parts adhoc.
Mac.

Hi Mac, unfortunately I only have VCDS lite and so don’t have the ability to do the detailed analysis over a drive. All I get is confirmation of ‘random/multiple misfires’.

Standard on this one - pro boost is on my other one. As part of my self diagnosis efforts, I am going to swap in the pro boost to see if that helps.
It's well worth considering registering your Lite, at circa £70/80, (depending on £/$ rate). It can save that in unnecessary parts changed.
Mac.

And is the ECU standard, or ProBoost?

thanks Mac - I thought it was a lot more expensive so will look at that. Do you then run the VCDS (which links to my laptop) whilst driving? And does VCDS check fuel pressure too?

Yes, you just get a small key file for your money, that you save to the vcds folder, and the full functionality is then available. The FSI Fuel Rail thread shows how useful it can be, especially for FSIs.

Just to close this one out should anybody read this thread in future. I was planning to replace the coil packs (with Bosch) and spark plugs (with NGK) before the flashing EML came on as I could see that at least three of the coil packs were old (possibly the originals). All swapped out today and engine light has not returned and engine pulling very smoothly with no hesitation (better than it was before in fact). So a happy ending.

Great result. Really happy for you, and your FSI!
