Found on elsawin: Rough engine explanation & De-stratifying the FSI

A2OC Donor
Went through elsawin yesterday looking for the strange oil breather hose and found this interesting part about FSI engines.
Can the stratified charge be deactivated on A2?

Rough engine operation, hard combustion noise Release date: 04-Apr-2008

Customer statement / workshop findings

The customer complaint about an intermittently unsteady engine operation, connected with a harder
pre-ignition noise or knocking noises when pulling away or accelerating.
In some cases there may also be short jolts when changing the operating type, without misfiring
being logged in the memory.

Technical background

# The FSI engines with petrol direct injection work with the two operating types homogenous and
stratified charge.
With the particularly economical stratified charge a harder pre-ignition noise and a rougher engine
operation is connected.

# On FSI engines knocking noises in certain driving conditions are possible.
Within the limits of the knock control this improves the performance.
This is normal and has no negative effects on the service life of the vehicle.

Production change

From 01.05 and Chassis No. 8P 5A 105000 all A3 with 1.6 FSI and 2.0 FSI engines only the homogeneous
operating type is used.
For all A2 1.6 FSI and A4 2.0 FSI the original concept has been kept.

Measure

Check whether the vehicle is still equipped with stratified charge concept.

On the 2.0 FSI engine this can be recognised by the separately fitted NOx reservoir catalyst and on
the 1.6 FSI by the extended underfloor catalyst.

Check during a test drive whether the complaint is related to the change of the operating type by
selecting in the tester the measured value block 7 under engine electronics.
An 8 digit bit code appears in line 4.

In homogenous type a 1 appears in digit 8 (0000 0001) and in stratified charge in digit 5 (0000
1000).
If this is confirmed, the vehicle is in normal condition.

Please also see the self-study programmes 252, 253, 279 and 322.
If the customer is not happy with this argumentation, the stratified charge can be deactivated on
all A3 models.

Update the software of the engine control unit.

- For the 2.0 FSI engine use the CD with the Part No. 8P0 906 961 L.

- For the 1.6 l FSI engine with the engine control unit software 03C 906 056 use the CD with the
Part No. 4E0 906 961 Q or the SVM code 8P01A015.
Deactivate the stratified charge as follows:

1. Select self-diagnosis 01 engine electronics
2. 11 code II, entry 10011
3. 10 adjustment of channel 15 (homogenous lean), channel 16 (stratified charge outside idle speed),
channel 17 (stratified charge at idle speed)

The activation temperatures can be set in the individual channels.
By changing the basic value to 255 the respective operating type is deactivated.

- For the 1.6 l FSI engine with the engine control unit software 03C 906 056 AE use the CD 4E0 906
961 M or the SVM code 8P01A009.
This automatically decodes the stratified charge.
The individual adjustment channels cannot be selected here.

# Please inform the customer that by deactivating the stratified charge the fuel consumption will
increase slightly."

Here are some bad news, according to this thread https://a2-freun.de/forum/showthread.php?t=34837 (reply # 14):

The stratified charge is apparently disabled from 01/05 on all vehicles within the VAG Group. In some earlier vehicles with the 1.6FSI and 2.0FSI machine (A3 and A4) of the stratified-charge mode can be deactivated via coding. However, this requires a software update. The SW update for A3 and A4, does not seem to be available for the A2.
