Front suspension

Is there an easy way of dropping the knuckle from the shock strut?
Got the pinch bolt undone with no probs, drenched the join with plus gas.
Is it just a matter of hammering the knuckle till it parts?

Please do not hammer it very likely to damage it. On the inner side there is a split that the pinch bolt clamps. This is where to insert a spreader to gently open up the gap to enable the strut to be removed. I used a brass wedge, but anything with a bit of a taper to spread the part should work. Take all the usual safety precautions though especially eye protection, gloves ( if you can find any )

Great thanks for the input, it all came apart with a bit of persuasion. I fashioned a suitable spreader fron a cut down pry bar.
Now a Bit of a moan!
I followed all the advice in the definitive front suspension rebuild, got all the bits, built up the new (B4 shocks and suplex springs with the recommended Volks HD top mount.
Sadly the bolt holes are different from the A2 top mount. Ask me how I know. Came to fitting it all back together got one bolt in other two not even close.
Wasted half a day taking it all apart again stripping the new assembly down, and the old one, and reusing the old top mount, and then putting it back together AGAIN. I now have two new expensive Volks top mounts which are non returnable and unused..

That was a nightmare with wrong top mounts lots of extra work I feel for you on that one 😩 my last suspension rebuild I used meyle hd top mounts straight swap ..so not sure what’s happened there as polo ones are the same 🤔 ..

I used Febi ones both most recent rebuilds - went straight on as I would imagine the Meyle / Lemforders etc would and made a huge step forward. The question I would ask is whether the ones attempted above are genuine VW, or sold *as* VW strut bearings but actually another no-name supplier and they've got the model mixed up in packing? Although I've had o.k experiences with some of the online places, I am very aware that some only suggest that the parts they supply are "or equivalent" to a wide list of manufacturers, and sometimes the care taken by the pickers is a bit haphazard.

Apart from the top mount issue, and obviously you're using B4s (as I have on all three cars done so far), what was the rest of your specification? I used Suplex springs on our 1.4i front and they've been superb.

No genuine VW from the local stealers.

does the part number correspond exactly? That 6Q part has been on the recommended part list for ages now - granted, I didn't go for it because of the price differential to Febis that I trusted based on quality of other parts of theirs used.
