Personally I think it is difficult to assess the front bearing health by listening to them with a lifted car without also removing the driveshaft, since those and the gearbox tend to add sounds.
But another reflection to your post: if you can feel a clear play in the bearing it is damaged. Any torqueing of the driveshaft nut cant affect a bearing play other than as "placebo".
