FSD's and Weitecs - tomorrow!!

It's not a floaty, French type ride, but the best way to describe it is that it makes the car ride like a bigger car, or one with a longer wheelbase.

You still retain all the control and handling, but all the harshness and crashiness is gone.

Cheers,

mike

Yes... Its quite difficult to describe. The car feels taughter, quieter, flatter in corners but the bumps and potholes are just, errr.... absorbed... It feels like the suspension is working hard but letting the car just stay composed and sedate, whereas with the old OE setup, it was like the suspension was doing very little and the tyres and chassis was having to do most of the work. I am not very good at describing things, but that's my take on it... so yes.... like Mike says... it drives more like a larger car now.

Chees,

Lee

I agree with Lee and Mike. I have driven loads of hire cars and my A2 now rides more like Golf mkV. It corners much better mind!! As it doesn't feel as heavy. But on rough surfaces or on a concrete motorway it is quieter and smoother. It is a bit wierd how it can be smoother and taughter at the same time! I guess that is why they are patented! My squeaking has also changed, so I think it may be something in the tools/compressor in the boot :D One to look at over the weekend. I may also give it a good clean and take it for a proper test run down my local back lanes, lets see how well it really corners!

Cheers,

David

PS My wife had the car today and came in grining from ear to ear, apparantly it goes round islands better

The tread on my two left tyres is wearing faster than the right. This entirely due to the pleasure I get negotiating a certain roundabout in my A2 with Koni FSDs :D

John.

I finally got round to measuring the ride height (on 30/30 weitecs and 185/50R16 wheels and tyres).

Figures are from the top outside centre of the wheel arch to the centre of the wheel hub. I did this in the dark with a tape measure, so presicion is likely to be +/- 3 or 4mm.

Front Before 354mm After 344mm = drop of ~10 mm (as predicted!)
Rear Before 360mm After 345mm = drop of ~15mm (again as predicted!)

The front hasn't dropped as much, and visually you can tell, but as they seem to have the same ride height now it looks pretty good. Since the gap between the wheel and the wheel arch is now even all the way around. I will take a couple of pick at the weekend and post them, I will also try and get one of the view from behind the car, when you can clearly see the gold coloured struts and the bright green springs, v. nice!! :D

Cheers,

David

Yeah. I will measure and photograph mine at the weekend too. Unfortunately I didn't measure before hand, but it would be good to compare post-fitment measurements.

Mike.... Why did you fit the Sport springs on the rear of Tank? What were the Weitec rears doing wrong for you, or was it just the look? If I replaced the rear Weitecs with original Sport springs, what could I expect that to do to the overall ride and handling in comparison? Also if I tried some Sports on the rear at some point, would I need to change the bump stops again, or could I keep the original -30mm cut down ones on?

Thanks all,

Lee

Well, next to the known WEITEC 30/30 sport springs set WEITEC also offers the 30/00 mm lowering spring kit.

The 30/00 kit is characterised by the same front springs than 30/30, however the rear 00 mm springs remain Audi stock height or Audi stock sports springs.

So in case of WEITEC 30/00 only the front springs are changed to achieve a slight V-type lowering (front lower than rear).

Mike did exactly the same - he converted from WEITEC 30/30 to 30/00.

The reason? Maybe due to heavy stereo in the boot just for good looks...

Also if I tried some Sports on the rear at some point, would I need to change the bump stops again, or could I keep the original -30mm cut down ones on?

You can leave your minus 30 mm shortened rear PUR bump stops mounted after changing to WEITEC 30/00 because you only add positive spring travel with the stock height rear springs. :)

I used the 30/00 as we often carry heavy loads in the boot, so 30mm would have caused rubbing on the arches, especially on bumps!

Mike

Mike was V. busy that day!!

I arrived at 10am on the dot and literally didn't stop until just turned 5pm!

Mind you, had a 2 hour rest of the M25 on the way back!!

Cheers,

Mike

Back to FSD's !! ;)

I have noticed an improvement in braking perfromance, since the car doesn't lurch forward as much when you slam all on. I guess this is what happens when the dampers work in tune with the weight of the car? It feels more stable, and inspires a lot more confidence, esp since the roads were quite wet at lunchtime today.

The whole car feels more grown up, and bigger, so a great upgrade all round. I hope those interested can get a group discount, since this is better than buying a new car!! and a whole lot cheaper!

David

After a quick wash here are a couple of pics. I think the ride height looks pretty even now? I wish it would stay this clean though ;)

Cheers,

David

Hi Dan did you not go out in Tank at the London cruise ?Or was Mike to busy

Cheers Phil

Unfortunately not - Mike had 3 other cruises to fit and I'd jumped the queue anyway as my wife was likely to go into labour at any time at that point so couldn't really hang about anyway!

If I got Weitec 30/30s and the FSDs, would I see any rubbing issues with my 215/40/17s? Is it possible/sensible/worthwhile to put FSDs on standard SE springs?

Can someone post some pictures showing this nose up phenomenon when putting the FSDs on - before and after?
