Out of natural habits, I normally change gear when the revs go around 2000 rpm. Is this bad for the car? Should I continue on to 3-4000 rpm?

Is there an optimum rev value to which a gear should be changed?

3000-3500 for me, my downfall is forgetting to change down gear because the engine is so quiet. ie: when cruising on lanes at about 40-50mph, and when approaching slow moving traffic trafic or have to slow down i'm still in 5th gear with the revs at about 1100-1500. It seems that the car can pull it but I'm sure it cant be good. :(

Iaz, i actually do the exact same thing, and i'm also unsure about it being bad for the car, however having said that i think changing gear at 2000rpm is not as bad, as changing gear at 3500 - 4000rpm..
