gear changing @ 2000 rpm

Out of natural habits, I normally change gear when the revs go around 2000 rpm. Is this bad for the car? Should I continue on to 3-4000 rpm?

Is there an optimum rev value to which a gear should be changed?

3000-3500 for me, my downfall is forgetting to change down gear because the engine is so quiet. ie: when cruising on lanes at about 40-50mph, and when approaching slow moving traffic trafic or have to slow down i'm still in 5th gear with the revs at about 1100-1500. It seems that the car can pull it but I'm sure it cant be good.

Iaz, i actually do the exact same thing, and i'm also unsure about it being bad for the car, however having said that i think changing gear at 2000rpm is not as bad, as changing gear at 3500 - 4000rpm..

In the TDI... 2000 rpm is about right, remembering that just over 4000 is the red line, ours dosen't like being in 5th at less than 40mph..will do it but dont expect it to pull in any sort of hurry.
