Gearbox issues... Gear selection

Hi,

Have noticed in my last few trips out in the car that the gearbox appears to be doing very strange things.. It seems to be moving about?? Im not sure how best to explain but also have difficulty selecting gears ie 1st seems to be ok but not happy to go from 2nd to 3rd it wants to go to 1st!! Also not happy to go into any gear on the change down from 5th, I seem to spend a lot of time in neutral just trying to find any of the higher gears..

Just wondered if anyone has had similar problems?? I don't suppose a new gearbox is going to be cheap. Will call Audi tomorrow..

Cheers

Kat

Hi Kat,

You don't want to think about a gearbox replacement....about £1700 new.

I had a few issues a while ago and got some great advice. Your issue sounds like the gear linkage requires adjusting.

Thanks to Spike for the below (and sorry for the plagiarism).

If you suspect the linkage there is a good youtube guide on the basic gearchange setup - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tp9ggefOjAE

If you do follow the advice on the guide it is important to use a 5mm pin as anything smaller will not give good results

This all sound familiar, unfortunately for us even after the linkage adjustment we could not select 4th gear and the box had to be removed (independent audi specialist).

Turned out to be the 4th gear syncro assembly had warn and would not engage.

Once it was replaced all was good and the feel is better than new.

* if you have read my posts on this you would have read that I had another issue with the 4th gear however this was a faulty syncro ring that snapped and was replace free.

in summary

Reconditioned gearbox - which included 4th gear syncro assembly, complete set of new bearings and cog that was warn £800 with 12months warrantee

Thanks

Thanks for the reply all.

Had a watch of the posted link, its good to see how these things work but I have no idea how to remove the bonnet of my car let alone dare work on it!!! Will have a fiddle on a motorbike but can only do the very basics on a car, and better half would never have the time.

Will book the car in with Audi, at least I have an idea of what the issue could be and would hate to pay more than I really need.

Cheers

Kat :)
