Gearbox Oil

I am still at a loss as to where the gear oil drain plug is? As you can see mine doesn't have the black 3 bolt support bracket. There is a 2 bolt support bracket, but I cannot see any possible drain plug behind there so reluctant to remove the bracket see photo 1. Could the star plug in photo 2 which is above the bracket? Help!

Hi everyone,

Have I highlighted the correct fill and drain locations?

Thank youu :)

When you do locate the drain plug and the refill plug, ideally buy the drain plug tool or if like me you don't have one you can manage with the correct sized bolt head that fits the drain plug recess. You can then use either a Stilton Wrench or a Footprint Wrench on the shank of the bolt to undo and later tighten. Highly irregular but needs must when out in the 'country'! Both wrenches will grip the bolt shank the harder you turn.

Ideally you will need a syringe to refill the gearbox but using your initiative you can manage with a small Tun dish to which you have attached a short length of clear flexible hose to push onto the tun dish outlet. All will become clear when you find the drain/refill plugs! I change gearbox oil every 50K. It is important and NOT sealed for life. A new gearbox is over £2k. Oil is cheap!

PS. Above comments relate to 1.4 TDi 75 5-speed gearbox type EWQ which I have in my 2001 A2. Gear oil recommended was VW/AUDI
ref. G 060 726 A2. doesn't say whether synthetic or semi-synthetic. Cost was about £5 a litre. Think I used less than two litres. My dealer had it in stock but it may have to be ordered. It does state 'Reserved for industrial and professional use. Safety data sheet available on request for professional users. It does look more like a workshop pack.

I've not seen a petrol gearbox but think the star drive plug in wngl's picture 2 is the drain. The filler has an identical star drive plug but is on the opposite face of the diff housing, just below the centreline of the driveshaft seal.
these plugs can be very tight and sound advice from another member is to always loosen the filler plug first, before draining the oil - just so you don't end up with an empty gearbox with no way of topping it up

It's not too clear but the 2 plugs are item 4 on this parts diagram

I've ordered 2 litres of gear oil to do the oil change on my 1.4 TDI transmission. Car has done 137k and gear changes feel a little notchy.

I've resurrected this thread as I have a few queries that I'm hoping someone may be able to answer.

1/ Is the drain and filler plug tool identical? Difficult to tell from picture earlier - is it a solid 17mm hex? I have a special star drive tool for the A4 which is unique to VAG transmissions.

2/ I take it a pump dispenser is the preferred choice to decant oil into the transmission. Specs reckon up to 2 litres, but judging be earlier comments it's nearer 1.5 litres.

3/ Worth getting the car to temperature to increase the viscosity of the oil?

4/ Finally, worth using front ramps to do the job, or simply jack it up and get axle stands in there. My drive has very slight slope, so even with car raised at front it levels out if driven in, rather than reversed in... if that makes sense? :p

ETKA print out is courtesy of nice parts guy at Audi for a 2002/3 75PS 1.4TDI.

Yes, drain plug (under the pendulum mount which needs removing first) and the filler are the same - 17mm hex.

I've always just used gravity and a funnel to fill in the past. Takes a little time, but it's therapeutic watching the oil drain down.

To drain the old stuff, yes.

4/ Finally, worth using front ramps to do the job, or simply jack it up and get axle stands in there. My drive has very slight slope, so even with car raised at front it levels out if driven in, rather than reversed in... if that makes sense? :p

You need the car level when refilling, slight discrepancies are fine though. If you drain the box well, I'd expect the fill to take nearer 1.9 litres, not 1.5

Also, perform a gear shift linkage adjustment to help with the notchiness.

Cheers,

Michael

I changed my gear oil last year albeit 1.4 petrol...used a syringe to get it in.It is important that the car is level otherwise it will pour out while you are half way through filling or you will overfill.

With the diesel versions, as long as the car is level or slightly tilted back, you'll be fine filling the oil - just never put more than 1.9 litres in (it'll take more when the nose is up in the air).

Cheers,

Michael

Did another oil change recently using genuine G 060 726 A2 gearbox oil. This time, with the nose up in the air on axle stands, about 1.8-1.9 liters came out. On previous gearbox oil changes I've had the car level on a ramp and then only 1.5-1.6 liters came out.
