I own a 1.4 TDI with 63k miles from new. A whine that sounds like a wheel bearing has been diagnosed as worn gearbox bearings. Will need new bearings (£1,000) or new gearbox (£3,000). Just paid £900 for service including new cam belt (recommended). Whats the point of buying a frugal car when the cost of keeping it on the road is so high? Also had two anti-roll bars fitted since new. Next car will not be an Audi....

I have to somewhat agree... My car's low cost per mile as quoted by the AA etc is has been severely ofset by high dealer cost for all sorts. Also had anti-roll bars done (thankfully at 59000 miles so under warranty), cambelt at £450, THREE brake sensors at about £60 a pop (incl labour),a total new driver's seatbelt mechanism (£250 but done under warranty), many many lightbulbs of which only the first 3 were fitted free and the last one was £42, a split intercooler at £350, tracking at £220 (from Audi) which is still woefully out and a quote for £180 for two new bootlid gas struts!!! (which I politely refused)... But I still love the car!!! I still believe had I bought my second choice (an Alfa 147) I would have had a list 10 times as long and I would definitely not have had such good dealer service as I have had up to now... I just pray my gearbox and Open Sky don't go!!!

Soon I think it will need shock absorbers... and I don't even want to know how much a set of four will be...

Have word with AMD in Oxford, they will do you a set of 4 KONI adjustables, fit them and do 4 wheel tracking for under £500.

Thanks EF... will keep that in mind!!!

Might it be an idea to go to an independant gearbox specialist, to get a 2nd opinion? I know we have one about 20 miles from us here in Sussex....
