Getting ready

The easiest method I should think is to remove the aluminium console with control arm and separate on the bench. Just doing one at a time and marking its location should see no major alignment or subframe movement issues. This is how I did the job recently but only because I had in preparation fitted new control arms to some second hand aluminium consoles.
I will probably end up doing just that, especially the drivers side if I'm still struggling to remove the long bolt.

Afternoon John,

A great effort there. Looks like a very tedious operation with a few things that can go wrong along the way. The very best of luck getting this task complete.

Kind regards,

Tom

Thanks Tom.
It's now that bolt that's going to keep me awake at night.
Not sure if I should apply heat to the bolt.

i replaced the same large bush on our polo a few years ago i used threaded bar and made up some metal as spacers to pull it out and to pull the bush back in place.

It very much depends on what they charge for labour. I had this work done by the VAG independent specialist I routinely use for all my servicing, I supplied new shocks and wishbones, plus new front discs and pads and the total bill for labour was £355, before VAT.
So the final value would be around £600-800. Makes sense trying to change it diy first.

I also noticed its at a slight angle, as far as I know that bolt has never been out. I'll try and get some close up photo's of the area.

Not sure, but you might find some inspiration from my previous work.

The other wishbone is now out, the stuck bolt obviously came out but I used a bit of heat on it and it eventually came free.
Next up was to pull the wishbone out.

It wasn't for budging at first, so some gentle heat while under tension and it popped out.

6 new bolts ordered from Bolton Audi, £5.20 each.
Yip, 6, ive got two others to do after this one. The garage of dad again.

Great work John,

Let me know when your fleet is done and I’ll bring my 3 up!

Nice write up which I’m sure will help us all over the course of time. It really is scary to see how bad these look from above when they look ok from below.

Kind regards,

Tom

Indeed Tom.
In all fairness jogas thread has been most helpfull.
I just didn't want to remove the console that's why i thought outside the box using the strap.
Getting the thing back in is the next step, but I have a cunning plan blackadder.

Here's my cunning plan, it's a big b****r, gonna drill a hole in the handle for a metal bar to give more leverage, slowly slowly, catch e monkey.

Is that for getting the new wishbone back, or for getting the new big bush in?
Or are you planning on reusing the old bush?
