going to have mechanic change timing belt/chain and water pump soon...

car is a 1.4 diesel

thermostats?

oil change?

should I request a specific brand of kit for belt and water pump?

Assume this is the TDI? When you say chain do you mean the oil pump/balancer shaft drive chain? If so then need to drop sump so makes sense to change oil & filter at the same time. Also check that garage obtains the full chain kit with tensioner and the four drive sprockets.
The coolant is drained so good time to change thermostat and sender unit as well if they have been giving problems.

With regard to brands, Audi, Continental & Gates all seem to have good reports.

While he's in there (your mechanic), maybe he wants to change the auxillery belt as well (has to come off anyway), and have a look at the state of your alternator freewheel.
