hazard lights keep going off by themselves at night

Hi All

I have just bought an Audi A2 on a 54 plate and have had it a week.

It has a fault and the hazard lights keep coming on by themselves and coincedentally, it always seems to happen overnight. i.e. I'll wake up in the morning, look out of the window and the lights are flashing. The battery has nearly been drained on 3 occasions in the last week.

My garage can't find anything wrong with it.

I have seen from previous threads that others have had this problem. Did anyone manage to get a resolution? Any advice appreciated.

Cheers

This could be either the comfort (convenience) unit or the flasher relay.

Flasher relay is located behind the ash tray area and the comfort unit is the black box located under the passenger floor panel. You will need to lift the carpet and un-clip (x3 plastic half turn screws) the silver cover to get to the comfort unit.

If a process of elimination was to be used then logically I'd replace the flasher relay first as it is the cheapest option.

Cheers
Sarge

Thank you both for your quick and helpful responses to my problem. :)

I'll feed this back to the garage concerned. :)

It could well be the car alarm but you should also get a 'pathetic' beeping sound as the hazzards flash.
Did your garage do a diagnostic scan to check for fault codes?

Cheers Spike

The alarm sound is so anaemic you might not even notice it. I certainly didn't when Skipton set it off to show me how feeble it is!

the siren unit itself is not quiet, it is the foam around it that muted the volume! I found out when I set it off while the foam was out as i was investigating the four beeps and random alarm going off.

the siren unit is below the driver side rear light cluster, below the boot release puller. I've got CD changer so access is a lot easier and so was removing the foam.

It may well be your alarm as other have said, beware, some people set the alarm off every night, so you ignor it thinking it's messing about then they steal the car .............

My husband tookt he car away last night to Bournemouth and it did it twice again. The garage I bought it from is not an audi specialist, so they are in the process of booking it into an audi specialist for a diagnostic. I left it with them overnight in a secure compound and it did not go off, so it makes me wonder if it is an alarm fault. Cheers again for all your comments.

I think your post's title was confusing a few people. There is a difference between just the hazard light going off or the hazard light going off with the alarm siren sound. I'm guessing it wasn't just the hazard light, it was the alarm being set off?

A diagnostic will come back and tell you what triggered the alarm. My random alarm set off issue was fixed after I replaced the dying car battery. My alarm was randomly triggered by the glass breakage sensor which wasn't faulty.

Hi All,

No the alarm was not going off at all, no audible noise. That's the first question Audi asked when they booked the car in for investigations. It was just the hazard lights turning themselves on without warning at all times of night and day with no cause.

The car is with Audi at the moment (under warranty thankfully) and they have changed the Hazard Relay. Since changing this part, it has gone 24 hours without the hazard lights turning themselves on for no reason. I will keep an eye on it for the next week and see how it goes. I am hoping that a faulty Hazard Relay switch was the source of the problem. Audi have said if the lights (not alarm) still switch themselves on after having the realy changed, then it'll need a new CCU. So fingers x'd. Thanks again all for taking the time to comment on my thread.

ah ha! Just the lights and I would also suggest the relay. It is one of the cheaper things that Audi dealer can fix for you and they even have these in stock proving just how popular they are! Best of luck, you have warranty anyway, but I hope this fixes it.

Hi All

Just to confirm that Audi changed the Hazard relay and it's fixed. The lights haven't turned themselves on in over a week. Such a relief to have it fixed. I can actually enjoy the car now rather than it being a constant pain!!!!! :D
