Hi, ive just joined as i am interested in purchasing an A2 Diseasel.

I have had Audi's in the past and currently have a 61 plate TT Sline Diesel Quattro.

Thanks

Mark

Hi Mark,

Welcome to the A2oc and good luck with your search. Tdi's are in demand so good examples go quickly but if you look in all the usual places and act quickly then I am sure you will find what you are looking for.

And bear in mind you will proberly have to travel to get what you want.

Cheers

David

What sort of budget do you have in mind?
As David said, be prepared to travel to find the right one, and be patient - supply is low, demand is high!
Good luck with your quest, happy hunting!

Hi Guys, thanks for the welcome.

Having looked at the performanve figures for the TDi i'm inclined to get a petrol now. The 0-60 time of the diesel is around 12 seconds from what i can make out where as the 1.6 petrol is under 10.

I'm currently driving an Audi TT 2.0 Tdi Quattro S Line (manual) and a Nissan Navara V6 Outlaw (7 speed Auto)

The Nav tows our 5th Wheel Caravan which weighs 4.5T.

Even the Nav is quicker than the Tdi A2 and that weighs 2.3 ton and is as aerodynamic as a barn but i suppose it does have 231Bhp and 550Nm of torque.

On the plus side the economy would be double as the Nav does 28-32 mpg. The TT is a lot better and can see upper 50's if driven carefully.

So guys, convince me which way i should go.

I'd buy a TDI and have Stealth remap it; most TDI75s end up with 100-110bhp after a remap. The FSI leaves the factory with 110bhp, but with less torque. It's also much more thirsty and much less reliable. I certainly have a bias towards the diesels, but I'd never own the 1.6 FSI due to the higher running costs and the fear of it going wrong ...again!

Thanks Tom. Diesel is still tempting me as I put that through my books for the other two vehicles.

Each diesel I've owned has always had a DTUK plug in tuning box fitted. The TT is 210bhp and the Nav will be 285bhp with 650nm when I get it.

Hoping this would make an A2 diesel lively enough when required.

Any things to check for when buying one??

The DTUK box doesn't work too well on the A2 TDi, I tried one having used them on other cars previously but ended up with a remap, much more successful. Nothing wrong with DTUK products and I know Andrew who runs DTUK very well having helped him set up a car club some years ago (Astra T8OC). I have run various performance cars such as a 944Turbo however I think you will find the torque of the TDi especially with a remap gives better real-world performance in an A2 than the 0-60 figures suggest. In-gear acceleration is what matters and as Tom says the FSi is not noted for reliability. However the A2 in any guise isn't all that hi-tech in comparison with todays cars, I used to get 50mpg+ out of an A3 2.0TDi without trying and get similar economy out of my wifes Toledo with same engine and DSG. The 60+mpg in my a2 is good and I am happy enough with it but it's not spectacular by todays' standards. A 3 series will give similar economy....

The other point if you're really keen on A2 performance would be to track down the later 90PS TDi model and get that remapped, then you're into the 120PS arena and a lot more torque.
Mapped TDis are pretty sprightly for in-gear acceleration it has to be said, the combination of lots of torque and not much weight does come in handy. The out-right 0-60 figures are ultimately limited by the inherently low rev range of the diesel and needing to get into 3rd to get to 60!

To be honest, when I came to the A2 I was used to driving performance cars and thought I'd never bridge the performance gap (coming from a heavily re-worked S2 quattro for example) but I soon learned to get my fun from other aspects of driving!

Hi what year did the 90hp models start??

I believe the TDI90 was available from October 2003 onwards. They can be identified by the 'I' in TDI being red as well as them having rear disc brakes rather than drums.
A majority of sellers will make it obvious that they're selling a TDI90, as they're much rarer and command a price premium. Be aware that, whilst there are obvious advantages (a remapped TDI90 absolutely flies!), they are slightly less reliable than the TDI75 by virtue of having a dual-mass flywheel and a variable vane turbocharger.
