Help needed with headlights - MOT tomorrow

Hi all.
I have my MOT tomorrow. im currently using the auto headlight switch which has no illumination for the rear fogs, so in preparation i bought a regular, rear fog only switch.

the headlights work as expected with the auto headlight switch, however the regular one only shows side lights regardless of which position i switch it.

am i missing something fundamental here? the regular switch has more connector pins than the auto one so it should just work, right?

...really wish id tried this a few months back 😖

thanks,
drew

Drew, if the rear fog indicator isn't working on that switch, I'll refund you. If you mean that there's no different indication between the sidelights and the dips, that's what they do. You get the little green icon in the instrument cluster for either, then the blue one on top for mains.

very kind ian but no need for that 🙂

the light illuminates on the dash, but the actual headlights don't come on when switched to the far right position.
the sidelights work, as does the rear fog light (led on the switch and the physical fog light) just seems totally bizarre that the headlight doesn't come on!

The ignition is ON when you try to switch to headlights? If the ignition is OFF you will only get side lights or parking lights if you use the indicator stalk.

If stuck leave the Auto switch fitted and see if it is picked up.

You have to have both the ignition and the dipped beams on to use the rear foglight. Sounds like it's a duff switch - I'm so sorry, I should have tested it in one of my A2's before sending it. There's no question but to refund you Drew - should be incoming now 👍 Fingers crossed the auto headlight switch makes it through the MOT. 🤞

yeah ignition is on but no lights. ill keep the auto switch and hope for the best 🤞🏻

quick update to say the fog switch wasn't picked up on the mot 😁

...however it did fail on a split cv boot and a wiper blade rubber being a bit dangly.

the latter im kicking myself over as i noticed it fraying a few weeks back but as its not been used since. totally forgot to order a new one 😣

Good news!

I presume the wiper fail is actually that it fails to clear the screen properly (which in itself is somewhat subjective but I do like to be able to where I am going in fairness)

exactly that. it clears the windscreen absolutely fine, it's just the top couple inches of rubber thats a bit flappy 🙁

If it clears the screen I am not aware that it can fail, a split wiper blade or not is irrelevant if its doing it's job (no doubt it's in the best interest of the presenter to consider it mind)

no other advisories so ill take the hit on the wiper blade.
the cv boot has been quoted at £180 which of course is made up of labour as the part is only £12 so ill be bringing it home to do the work myself on saturday

£180 wow that's an impressive hourly rate or expensive hub nut!!

What did the fail state regarding the wiper?

in fairness to them they've quoted 2hrs for the work which seems a tad excessive, but hey ho.

the windscreen fail was, "windscreen wiper does not clear the windscreen effectively (3.4 (b) (ii)"

- it's subjective, but ive had a car fail on the numberplate not being white enough. true story

Are they allowed to say that in 2023??? 😳

I had a 'Pass with Defects' last month on my Land Rover Freelander 1. The defect was 'split rear wiper blade'. The rubber was split for around an inch at the top end.
The OEM replacement doesn't have a split but neither does it have the correct curvature to effectively clear the window as well as the defective one did!
