Hello,
I've just bought a petrol 1.4 open sky 03 plate. I'm a little concerned as I can hear a tapping noise coming from the engine, almost like a
dodgy tepid. Not sure if the noise was the characteristic of the car and its something I have to get used to. I've been used to an A3 which didn't make a noise. Any ideas. Thanks

Is the tapping noise there all the time, or just at tick-over, just when cold etc?
How many miles has the car done?
When was it last serviced?

The hydraulic lifters on the petrol engines do get noisy over time. Replacement of all 16 lifters should have the car running very quiet and smooth, but it’ll be at a cost of over £600. If the cambelts are due to be changed this is the idea time to get this work done, along with a new water pump.
The cambelts need to be removed before the cam-carrier itself can be removed, and then the lifters can be replaced.

The Cam belt has just been renewed . The car is under a 3 month warranty so looks like it'll be going back.

Apart from the noise I'm really pleased with he little car.
